Phone Call from Santa
Chapter Five: Epiphany

At first Mike thought he was going insane. But the more he looked at the man who smiled at him he stopped doubting his sanity. "Did you really call Billie Joe on the phone today?" he asked.

"It was a warning for you." Santa said. "You didn't have to see any of that. But perhaps it's better that you did."

"B-But if you're real . . . why was my dad putting stuff in my stocking?"

Santa looked sad for a moment. "Some people lose their innocence in life. When they do, they stop believing in the things that were so innocent during their childhood. It happened in your family. Your grandmother lost faith and that passed to your father and then to you."

"A-And Billie never really lost his innocence then?" he asked. "Even after I told him."

"He prayed to me that you would love him and you did." Santa said, smiling. "It's a bit like Christianity with him."

"So . . . you're real?" Mike suddenly felt extremely strange, like a veil was being lifted from his eyes that he never knew was there. "And all that time I thought he was insane?"

"Billie understands things." Santa said. "Things people his age have forgotten. Tre and Adie believe in me. They were never told not to. But Billie sees beyond that. Billie sees into a person. He sees the good in you even when others can't. That's why it's so important you see past the things you might not like in him. It can't be give and take if you never give."

Since when is Santa a marriage counselor?

"Merry Christmas." Mike watched Santa go up the chimney and didn't even hear the door open.

"Merry Christmas." he said to the fireplace.

"Mike?" Billie asked. "Who're you talkin' to?"

Mike turned and smiled. "Santa."

Billie rushed for the fireplace and looked up it, emerging covered in ash. "But I waited outside for him. For hours and hours and I never saw him."

Mike smiled and brushed a bit of soot off Billie's cheek. "I'm sorry I said that about the phone call. I didn't understand yet."

"Do you understand now?" Billie asked.

"I love you." Mike said. "I understand you and I understand this. I understand Christmas."

Billie smiled and kissed his husband. "I told him I wanted you to be happy for Christmas. I told him. Santa always listens to me."

Mike looked at the clock. 12:01.

"Well, Billie Joe, how about that Christmas romp you asked for?"
