Chapter Five
Chapter Five
They sat in front of the television and watched CNN. Wolf Blitzer was on talking about the situation that was spreading rapidly across California and that if the US military couldn't contain it would spread nation wide within two weeks.
"How can it already be all over California?" Josie asked, somewhat calmer now that Grace had given her a valium from her purse.
"Because the people that get bit, become infected." Brody said, trying once again to phone his parents. They lived in Chicago and he wanted to tell them to get on the first plane to Europe, just get off the continent. There was already talk on the news that Overseas flights would be cancelled soon to prevent the spread of infection.
"So are we really safe here? Or should we try to get a helicopter? I have the resources. Take one to an airport out of state and then a private jet somewhere far from here." Rob suggested.
"I do think we are safe here for a while but if we can get a helicopter out of here we should try it. I can't help but wonder two things." Brody responded.
"What's that?' Renee asked.
"How long will it take for the city to be empty and then we are on our own. Those gates won't hold back that many things. And if they can't contain the infection through conventional methods, how long til they start dropping bombs."
"Bombs? Would they do that? To US civilians?" Renee asked, eyes wide with fear.
"I've seen them do worse." Brody said cryptically and handed the phone to Rob.
"We've got a flight. It's costing me a half million dollars to get us all out of here. Two choppers will be here withing three hours. They'll take us to Las vegas where I have arranged a private plane to New York. Once there we are on our own, there's no guarentee we can get flights to the U.K." Rob told them all.
"At least we won't be here." Grace said, hope stirring in her heart.
"I'll buy a boat if I have to. We'll be safe." He reassured them.
About an hour before the helicopters were to arrive Brad called up to Brody on his walkie talkie.
"We have a situation down here."
"What is it?"
"There's a bunch of them at the gate. How long til that helicopter gets here?"
"Around and hour. How many are there?" Brody asked, heading to the window to look outside.
"Eight of them. I was keeping out of site in the gatehouse. But they just keep coming to the gate, it's as if they know we are here.." Brad said, Brody could hear the nervousness in his voice.
"Shit. The gate is holding though right?"
"Yes."
"Okay. Keept tight and watch them. If they get in somehow, just run. Don't try to fight them. Run to the house."
"Right."
Renee was in Rob's kitchen with Nancy the cook and Grace. They were packing up some food and bottled water, they weren't sure what it was going to be like in Las Vegas or New York but they wanted to have something to eat. Rob and Brody decided they would get right on the plane to New York. They were worried they wouldn't be able to get flights to Europe. So they packed several loaves of bread, some peanut butter, apples, oranges, raisins, a box of Lucky Charms and a box of Frosted Flakes. As well as some cheese and crakers, chips and cookies.
"It should be enough." Nancy said.
"We'll be careful and make sure we spread it out." Renee answered.
"What happens if they can't stop this?" Nancy asked.
"God help us all." Grace replied.
