Chapter Four
Alexis tried her best not to spill coffee on her dress shirt as she tried listing off everything she had told herself she needed to remind her mother of. "Amy is really picky though Mom. She'll literally check what kind of soy you pour her. Only the one from the blue carton. You know about her whole thing on only wearing those silly rainboots Paul and Steph bought her to school but she needs sneakers in her backpack for yard play. Ballet is at 4:30 and...."
Linda laughed, pinching her cheek, "Okay Alex, I know. I'm the grandma, we know and remember EVERYTHING. Don't be worried. We'll see you in two weeks when we all meet up in New York. Amy will love to see you."
"Yeah, so much she won't want to leave. Thank god she's in class and not here or... well it'd be too hard to leave her."
Since Amy had been born she'd never spent more than a day or two away. Now she'd be gone period of times away. Vince and Linda had both brought up the idea of a tutor but Alexis had voted against it, wanting Amy to not have to travel, atleast not until she was a little older.
"She'll be fine dear."
Her mother's words were a comfort but she still worried. She sighed as she poured herself her third cup of coffee, one for Stephanie, and headed out the door. "Stephie, come take this cup it's hot!"
Stephanie turned away from the cars, taking the cup from Alex. "Thanks Bean. Apparently, Paul forgot how to pack the cars."
Paul scoffed, looking up, "First of all, Shane is supposed to be helping too. Secondly, we have extra bags."
"Sorry Paul, not walking around naked in the arena."
Stephanie almost choked on her coffee with a laugh, pulling Alex away, "Damn jet is waiting and we can't leave without Dad."
"When does Dad NOT make us late?"
"I think all three of us were late to our first day of school each year because of him. Which reminds me, how did your evening go?"
Alex made a pained face, "Well other than lunch with Kurt before he left to Lafayette early, Amy was a struggle."
~~~~
"Amy stop throwing things or I'll tell grandma not to let you watch TV for a week. This won't stop me from going lovie, Momma has a job to do."
"No no no no!"
Amy had thrown herself on the floor, beating the floor with her tiny fists. Alex took a deep breath, leaning against the doorway and sliding down to the floor. She watched Amy throw her tantrum which seemed to go on for atleast 30 minutes. Alex had closed her eyes, taking deep breaths. Finally, she felt Amy's little body pull itself into her lap with small little sobs. "Mommy please?"
Alex looked down at Amy. Her face was red, tears still flowing, her nose runny. "No Amy. You have school. Grandma and Auntie Marissa will take care of you. Your cousins will be here too." Amy seemed to have finally given up, sitting up in Alex's lap. Alex pulled her close, rocking her a little. "I promise when you see me in New York we will have fin together and you can help Mommy buy a new house."
~~~~
"You're getting a place in New York?," Shane asked, walking past them, carrying a bag.
"Yeah, I don't want to stay with you and Marissa every darn time I am in New York. It'll be nice to have a home there. Promised Amy she can come with me too."
"Let's go everyone, we're going to be late!," yelled Vince as he left the mansion. Shane, Stephanie, and Alex all laughed.
"Yeah Dad, you're right, it's our fault," Shane said, rolling his eyes.
~~~~
Alex felt like a 18 year old again. She felt odd sitting backstage, ordering people around, making sure things were going off as planned. Vince was still trying to convince his daughter she was perfect for on-air talent but she shook her head everytime. But there wasn't just the stress there in the arena. Her phone wouldn't stop ringing with calls from Amy, insisting her mother tell her every story possible and sing her every song. When Alex's phone rang for what seemed like the tenth time in an hour she didn't bother to check the number and simply picked it up with the angry tone reserved for her daughter, "Amy Elizabeth McMahon, I told you Mommy is busy and you give grandma back her cellphone you little devil."
"It's Johnson first of all and secondly don't call our daughter a devil."
Alex felt her body go into shock mode, a new anger rising within her, "Dwayne how the hell did you...?"
"Main offices. Your secretary is totally gay by the way."
She tried to hold back a laugh but it was too hard to. "Aren't you scared that he might tell the world you hit on him?"
"I'll survive... how are you?"
She thought a little before answering, not wanting to give him the pleasure of having a normal conversation with her, "I'm wondering why the hell we are talking on the phone."
"Alex I want to see her again."
Alex got up from the sofa she'd been sitting on and began pacing the room, "Excuse me? Why would I let that happen?"
"She's my daughter Alex. I think that's a good enough reason as to why."
"So fucking what?"
She stopped herself from raising her voice louder as someone knocked on the door. She quickly tried to end the conversation, "I can't talk. Bye." She groaned with annoyance, slamming the phone shut as he began to complain. "Come in," she said, throwing her phone on the sofa. "Dave!" She jumped into his arms, a wide smile on her face. "Dude I was wondering when you'd come find me. Miss me much?," she asked playfully.
Had it been up to him he'd make sure she knew just how much he had missed her but his better judgement stopped him. Pinching her cheek he made himself laugh, "Sure thing. Ready for the exciting life on the road?"
"Well I won't have it as rough as you do but sure. How's the wife?"
"Fine. Mad as ever I'm not there. But she never complains when the money comes in. I have to go. Autographs and then prep. How'd that thing with Kurt go?"
"Hmm?," she tried playing dumb.
"Oh no no no," he chuckled, "How was that silly dinner you two had?"
"Silly? I'll have you know it went VERY well."
He told himself mentally not to get angry mentally but he accidentally allowed his voice to show annoyance that she'd enjoyed her evening with Kurt. "Wait what? You're... kidding right?"
"No... I mean, he wasn't that bad and he's nice to talk to and...."
"Let's not get carried away here. Look, I know he seems great and all but maybe this isn't going to be the best idea. He has a reputation around here and you know it. Why mess with it?"
She'd known. She'd known he was believed to be a "ladies man." But he hadn't been with her that way. Not with her. She shook her head, looking up at Dave with a small smile, "Trust me? Please? I promise I know what I am doing here."
Dave nodded, defeated. He couldn't help but think to himself "I wish you'd trust me."
Much later that evening, Alex was watching the show from backstage. Without warning she felt someone pull the hair away from her neck, lightly kissing her. She smiled, turning around to face Kurt. "Why hello darling. Missed you."
"Same here. I've been meaning to see you all afternoon but I've been busy."
"It's fine, I've been busy all day. Yelled at like 10 different people today. It was kinda fun," Alex said. Kurt laughed, looking up over her shoulder at Dave and Paul who happened to walk near by. The looks on their faces, epecially Dave's, said everything. He hadn't made many friends in the back, not that Paul or Dave were the kings of popularity either. Alex had been talking about her day when she looked at Kurt's face again. Upon seeing that his attention was not on her she followed his gaze towards Paul and Dave who smiled at her quickly and walked away. "Those... hey don't pay any mind to them, they are just a tad bit over protective at times."
"Oh I'm not worried. As long as I have you."
~~~~
"I don't want you to see him," Vince said as they drove back to the hotel.
"Oh no you don't Dad. No telling me who I can date."
Stephanie laughed, rubbing Alex's knee. "Ignore him, It's great you're seeing someone finally."
Paul chuckled, "No I'm with Vince."
Stephanie shot her husband a look, "I dated YOU."
"So? I'm different."
Alex wagged her finger at Paul, "Dad didn't think so. Right?"
Stephanie and Alex both looked at Vince with stern looks. "Hey hey, since when do you two gang up on your Boss."
"Dad," Alex said, "You're my Dad. This isn't a work issue, this is a family issue. No hiding behind the WWE sir."
Vince couldn't help but smile at his daughter's smart mouth. "Really darling, just be careful dating in the company. Your sister got lucky."
"Eh... Paul's alright," Alex laughed as she dialed her phone to call Amy.
Weeks later, Alex had completely adjusted to the routine. By then everyone knew she and Kurt had been seeing each other. She ignored most of the questions she was asked constantly, rather focusing on her role backstage. She'd done a single interview backstage, in hopes of getting Vince to get off her back about doing more but it'd only caused not just him but Stephanie and Shane to continue on their quest at getting Alex on screen full time.
"I do one stinking interview and they make my life miserable Dave," she said as she gathered up papers, getting ready to leave the arena. "I said one interview. Then they start saying the audience wants to see more of me. TV isn't me though. I'm not cut out for it."
Dave shook his head at her, smiling, "I told you not to give in if you really didn't want to be on air talent. Look, you're beautiful. Most divas can't compare to how natural you were. Maybe... just maybe give it a chance?"
She looked up at him with narrow eyes, "You two-timer! You're with them!" She threw a ball of paper at him, making him laugh. As he got up to play fight with her his cell rang. He reached into his pocket, raising a finger to motion he'd be a minute, and with a worried face walked out the door. She continued packing, listening to his angered voice almost scream into his phone at times. At that moment she realized just how unhappy Dave was becoming. She wasn't prepared for his anger however when he re-entered the room. "DAMN IT!," he screamed, throwing the cellphone past her head. She felt herself grow hot, not appreciating his cellphone's close call with her head.
"Dave, what the fuck? That almost hit me dickwad. I know Angela pisses you off but there's no taking that shit out on me," She said sharply.
"Alex I wasn't TRYING to hit you with it, you know that!"
"Hell if I do Dave. Hit me with that thing ever and...."
"And what?" At this point they were in each other's faces, screaming as loud as they could. Alexis could feel his anger and it almost scared her until she watched the madness in his eyes slowly disappear. He couldn't stay mad when he looked at her. "I'm sorry Alex. She just... it's about the girls and how I'm ever there and the same arguement all the time."
"Dave...."
They were interupted by laughter as Paul, Stephanie, Shane and Marissa, whom had come to visit for the day, entered the room. Paul's voice shook them from the mood they were in, "Party!"
Alex raised an eyebrow, "Wait you four, you guys REALLY want me to go out tonight? Last time I checked, I drink everyone under the table."
Shane laughed, taking the bag out of his sister's shoulder as she went to hug her sister-in-law, "Although sadly that is true, we are in Miami tonight. That means fun. Let's go. Limo awaits. Go get Kurt."
"Oh...." Alex stopped, causing them all to turn to look at her. "See he left."
"Left?," Paul asked.
"He said something about having to go back home for something...."
"Well...," Marissa said, turning on a smile, "Let's US go have some fun, shall we?"
Alex had brushed off the fight with Dave and her sudden worry as to why Kurt had left off as soon as she stepped inside the club Stephanie had insisted the go to. She felt comfortable, deciding she'd dance and drink it all away.
"Look at her," Paul laughed, pointing to where Alex danced with Marissa, "That dancing never left her body."
"No way," Stephanie said, "She was BORN dancing probably. Right now... can't remember."
"Alex!," Marissa called to Alexis, "Really, you should dance again."
"That was so long ago Riss. Plus, after teaching Shane how to dance for your wedding I think I shall never dance again!"
"Hey! Not nice Alex. I knew how to dance before that," Shane said, taking his wife's hand.
Alexis smiled, "A little. And only because I taught you."
By the time they got back to the hotel they were all drunk and tired, Alex completely ready to change her clothes and attempt to sleep. She and Dave had barely spoken all night, Alex still a little peeved with Dave's temper tantrum earlier. They all got on the elevator together, getting off on their floors. Finally it was just Dave and Alex and he turned to look at her. He'd been watching her dance all night. He had never seen her that way before, laughing without a care in the world. She had been right, she'd drunk more than anyone and wasn't a complete mess, although she was rather drunk.
Alex watched the light flash on her floor number. As she walked off the elevator she turned back to face Dave, as if she was about to say something. Before she could say anything the elevator doors began to close. Dave attempted to reach the doors to stop them but he was too late. He rested his head against the elevator doors, cursing his lack of drive in that moment.
~~~~
Alex had considered sleeping naked, too tired to look for something to sleep in. She'd changed her mind when she figured it probably wasn't a good idea. Plus she always got cold rather quickly. She decided on a sports bra and small girl boxers, the first things she'd pulled out, and after a cold shower slid into bed. She couldn't sleep, rolling around the bed, frustrated. She was worried Kurt hadn't called all night. She was upset about the calls she kept getting from Dwayne to allow him the chance of seeing Amy, she was worried about how she felt around Dave. This was a plus to the way she felt after the nights drinks. She felt like the room was spinning a little now that she was lying down. She'd been lying there an hour or so when she heard the soft knock at her door. She tried her best not to trip in the dark, beginning to think that drinking the way she had wasn't her best decision ever. She slowly opened the door, closing her eyes as the hallway lights shone brightly.
Dave stood there, leaning against her door-frame. She smiled a little, realizing he wasn't wearing a shirt, rather only a pair of shorts. "Dave?"
"I'm sorry about earlier," he said quietly.
"I know," she said, wrapping her arms around him softly. He stopped leaning on the door-frame, wrapping his arms around her small body. She payed no mind to the fact they were pretty close to being naked and in the hallway no less, enjoying the feeling of being near him. She looked up at him with her sleepy smile, "Pretty mad were you?"
"You have no idea," he answered, cupping her face with his hand, "I couldn't sleep, she pissed me off so bad and then I messed up with you."
"Are you mad when you're with me?," she asked.
He answered honestly, "Never."
"Then stay with me."
He felt his heart skip a beat, making her look him in the eyes as she began to pull away shyly, "Really?"
"On one condition, no getting me all naked and sexing me up."
Dave laughed lightly, but reluctantly answered, "Okay, I won't go sexing you up."
She pulled him out of the hallway into the hotel room and once she'd locked the door, grabbed him by the hand towards the bed. She let go to slide into bed, throwing the covers over her body. As soon as he'd gotten comfortable she'd pulled herself towards him, burying her head into his neck between the pillows, throwing one arm over his chest and the other hand on his chest firmly where his heart was. He didn't hesitate to bring his arms around her, keeping her as close as possible. Dave could feel every breath she took on his neck, little tired sighs escaping her. He hadn't held anyone, not even his wife, that way in a long time.
~~~~
"Shit," Alex groaned, hung over, as her cell phone rang loudly. She was buried under Dave, comfortable and warm. She managed to slide an arm out, patting on the night stand on her side but she realized that the cell was on Dave's side of the bed. She quickly but carefully reached over him, trying her best to be careful not to wake him. She flipped the phone open as she brought it to her face, expecting Kurt or Amy's voice on the other end. "Morning?"
"Morning Alex."
"Damn it." She pulled herself out from Dave's body, quickly leaving the room into the bathroom. "It's too early to fight with you Dwayne. Please."
"Alex I am going to be in New York when the WWE gets there."
"I need a new secretary... Dwayne look she's going to be there and I don't want you there."
"Already planned on being in the arena for the show. Just backstage to visit. Please let me spend SOME time with her?"
Alex was sitting on the side of the big tub, trying her best to stay quiet. She wanted to be the opposite, yell and scream. Finally after some time of silence she sighed. "Look I can't talk now and I'm not saying yes. But if you are there then I can't stop you from seeing her can I?"
"No. That you can't."
"Okay then, let me go back to bed."
"Why? Is Kurt there?," he asked with a tone.
"No, not Kurt, Dwayne. Bye."
She hung up, sliding the cell phone into her sports bra between her breasts and walking back into the bedroom quietly. Alexis tried her best to get back into Dave's arms without waking him. As soon as she thought she had gotten comfortable she felt his arms tighten around her. She looked up at him, trying to read his expression before he spoke, "Good morning." He smiled, pressing his lips to her forehead, rubbing her back. She smiled back as her heart beat slowed down again and gave him a small squeeze.
"Hey there."
"So... want to explain why Rock was calling you and disturbing my slumber this morning? I was enjoying our sleep you know, I'll have to tell him I didn't appreciate it.

Alex had considered sleeping naked, too tired to look for something to sleep in. She'd changed her mind when she figured it probably wasn't a good idea. Plus she always got cold rather quickly. She decided on a sports bra and small girl boxers, the first things she'd pulled out, and after a cold shower slid into bed. She couldn't sleep, rolling around the bed, frustrated. She was worried Kurt hadn't called all night. She was upset about the calls she kept getting from Dwayne to allow him the chance of seeing Amy, she was worried about how she felt around Dave. This was a plus to the way she felt after the nights drinks. She felt like the room was spinning a little now that she was lying down. She'd been lying there an hour or so when she heard the soft knock at her door. She tried her best not to trip in the dark, beginning to think that drinking the way she had wasn't her best decision ever. She slowly opened the door, closing her eyes as the hallway lights shone brightly.
Dave stood there, leaning against her door-frame. She smiled a little, realizing he wasn't wearing a shirt, rather only a pair of shorts. "Dave?"
"I'm sorry about earlier," he said quietly.
"I know," she said, wrapping her arms around him softly. He stopped leaning on the door-frame, wrapping his arms around her small body. She payed no mind to the fact they were pretty close to being naked and in the hallway no less, enjoying the feeling of being near him. She looked up at him with her sleepy smile, "Pretty mad were you?"
"You have no idea," he answered, cupping her face with his hand, "I couldn't sleep, she pissed me off so bad and then I messed up with you."
"Are you mad when you're with me?," she asked.
He answered honestly, "Never."
"Then stay with me."
He felt his heart skip a beat, making her look him in the eyes as she began to pull away shyly, "Really?"
"On one condition, no getting me all naked and sexing me up."
Dave laughed lightly, but reluctantly answered, "Okay, I won't go sexing you up."
She pulled him out of the hallway into the hotel room and once she'd locked the door, grabbed him by the hand towards the bed. She let go to slide into bed, throwing the covers over her body. As soon as he'd gotten comfortable she'd pulled herself towards him, burying her head into his neck between the pillows, throwing one arm over his chest and the other hand on his chest firmly where his heart was. He didn't hesitate to bring his arms around her, keeping her as close as possible. Dave could feel every breath she took on his neck, little tired sighs escaping her. He hadn't held anyone, not even his wife, that way in a long time.
