Chapter 4
Chapter 4
Mana was standing in his huge walk in closet trying to choose what to wear. It would have to be something simple not to give Camui the impression that he had dressed up for him. He decided that a long black skirt and a simple long-sleeved shirt would do and completed the outfit with various accessories with crosses on them. With his puffy hair standing in every direction and his trademark heavy make-up he looked at himself in the mirror. He looked acceptable. He looked like his dark Moi Dix Mois-self and that was good. The last thing he wanted was to resemble the more dreamy and naive Malice Mizer-Mana that Camui had known so many years ago. Besides nothing was left of this side of him, Gackt made sure that was dead all those years ago.
When he heard his guest arrive he waited for Masumi to let him in. He didn't want to be around when his housekeeper saw that it was him who he had invited for dinner. Masumi had always been very fond of Camui when he still had been with Malice Mizer, but when he left the band and Masumi saw the change that this had brought on Mana he had started to accuse him for it. At first after Camui's departure she used to curse him almost daily and call him a poisonous snake with the appearance of an angel until Mana got sick of it and forbid her to mention him again.
He waited a few minutes and started to go downstairs bracing himself to face the person he had never wanted to meet again.
When Mana descended the stairs he found his guest and his housekeeper in a silent stare-contest. Masumi had her eyes narrowed and a serious expression on her broad face, Gackt was mimicking her but it was obvious that he had a hard time trying not to laugh.
"Oi Masumi-san, have you forgotten that I used to be your favorite boy in the whole wide world??" he finally asked smiling winningly at her.
"Hai(*)." the housekeeper answered dryly and turned on her heels. She spotted Mana on the stairs and raised an not approving brow at him. With the way she took off to the kitchen Mana only hoped that she wouldn't poison their food.
"Gackt-san, I hope you will excuse her bad behaviour, you know how difficult it is to find competent house-personal." Mana said and motioned to him to follow him to the dining-area.
Gackt had a grin on his face when he took the bottle of wine and the opener Mana handed him, as the other man went to get two glasses. "She may be a true dragon but she cares deeply for you." Mana didn't reply anything to that. There was no doubt that Masumi cared for him.
When both of their wineglasses were filled up Gackt raised his and said: "Let's drink to our fortunate reunion!" Mana who had already started sipping on his wine prayed that he would not choke. 'Or to the sick sense of humor fate has to make us meet again..' he thought dryly but raised his glass politely.
"I heard that you went on tour in Europe."
"It wasn't exactly a tour. I was invited to a festival there." Mana replied.
"I know -the biggest festival in the world for this kind of music.. and you were headlining it!" Gackt smiled proudly at him. Their conversation was interrupted when Masumi brought in their dinner.
"Shall we take our places?" Mana said sitting down at the massive black dining table. He scanned the various exotic dishes in front of him frowning. Hadn't he told Masumi this morning to prepare something simple?
Conversation was held short while they were eating with Mana effortlessly drowning Gackt's every attempt at it with short answers. He didn't even raise his head to look at him the whole time and now they were already done with eating, after both of them had declined dessert.
"I'm very honored that Masumi made so much effort to prepare this amazing dinner. It was delicious!" Gackt said.
"Maybe that's because she didn't know it was you who was invited for it, otherwise we would be eating conserved bean-soup and bred from last week.." Mana murmured before he could stop himself. Why did Camui always make him talk without thinking?
Gackt snickered at Mana's honesty. "That's more along the lines of what I would have expected judging from the way she throws the plates in front of me!"
"You are right, this is very embarrassing. I apologise to you for her behaviour and the hostility she is showing you. It is unacceptable. You can be sure that I will have a talk with her later."
"Mana-san, it's not Masumi-san's hostility I worry about but more over yours. I knew from the start I was not really welcomed here but can't you at least try to forget what you have against me? I want us to become friends again, I have missed you all those years."
Mana was seriously angry now. It had taken him 7 years to realise that he missed him? And how dare he even mention friendship in connection to them! What did Gackt want all of a sudden? He realised that dinner with him had been a very-very bad idea. His good manners forbid him to be impolite to him as long as he was his guest while all he wanted was to send him on a one way ticket ride to hell. He had no other choice than playing along.
"Please forgive me if you didn't feel welcomed in my home, it wasn't my intention." Mana told him avoiding on purpose anything about the becoming-friends-again issue. He glanced at the old clock on the wall. Only 32 minutes had passed since Gackt's arrival, he couldn't ask him to leave already. He just hoped that Gackt had enough sense to excuse himself soon.
He didn't really see a point in their meeting.
"Shall we have a drink in the living-room?" he asked standing up to see Gackt nod. They went over to Mana's spacious living-room and he went to the bar to make their drinks.
"What would you like to drink, Gackt-san?" Mana asked while scanning over the various bottles. He hadn't noticed how close behind him Gackt stood until a deep voice next to his ear replied: "A bloody mary would be nice." Mana froze at Gackts proximity. The empty glass he held in his hand fell on the counter and shattered into hundreds of pieces. Confused by his own clumsiness he didn't notice immediately that the glass had cut his hand until Gackt turned him around and took the injured hand into both of his.
"I am sorry, I didn't want to scare you. Let me take care of this." He spoke in a low seductive tone.
Mana wanted to snatch his hand back but he was too hypnotised to do or reply anything.
So it was still there, this tension between them..
Mana's heartbeat was going at full force as Gackts fingers carefully removed the tiny glass-shreds from his hand. His eyes were fixed on Gackts face, the concerned look in his amazing eyes, the soft pout lips.. He just couldn't avert his gaze and then Gackt looked up. Fake blue orbs locked on equally fake grey ones and it seemed that time stood still. Gackt raised Mana's hand to his lips murmuring with his deep voice: "I will kiss it better" letting his lips ghost over Mana's fingertips. Mana could only stare as Gackt slowly pressed his slightly opened lips onto one of the tiny cuts and let his tongue connect subtly with the skin, his gaze never breaking away. Mana heard himself gasp at the contact and the sound of it made him snap back into reality. He pulled his hand abruptly away from Gackt and took a few steps back.
Not this again.
Not this sick game of his again that Camui had always enjoyed so much when he himself had gotten destroyed by it last time. Everything in Mana tensed visibly.
Gackt took a step towards him, to hear him hiss with hatred: "Don't touch me." When he realised how that sounded he added somewhat apologetically: "You know that I don't like to be touched.."
"Hai, gomen nasai(**)." Gackt murmured just to calm him down, although he knew that Mana's words weren't entirely true. He remembered that the man in front of him didn't like to be touched by strangers , but he had never reacted with him like that before. He remembered a time when Mana had spent whole nights in his arms while they were talking about nothing and everything.
Mana was trying hard to find his composure again. Damn him for making him feel like a frightened animal ready to lash out. Damn him for making it so obvious how much he had hurt when he left. He decided that he didn't want to play this masquerade anymore -to hell with politeness.
