Chris fiddled with his eyebrow ring

Chris fiddled with his eyebrow ring -- a sure sign of nervousness in this otherwise self-confident man. He watched out the window of the airplane as it taxied in to Anchorage International Airport. The latest snowfall made the surrounding area a blank canvas, waiting for some thing of color to define it as anything other than an empty place. Chris shivered at the thought of all that cold.

"Chris?" The deep voice of his lover jolted the older man out of his revery. He turned to the boy, taking in with a pang the dark circles under his eyes, the obvious loss of weight, the sadness turning in his jade-green eyes. His own pain threatened to overwhelm him for a moment, but he ruthlessly pushed it back down, wanting nothing to interfere with this trip.

He answered Lance honestly. "Just dreading the cold, baby." Chris placed his hand over the younger man's, rubbing a thumb over the soft skin of his knuckles. He had high hopes that this trip would turn things around for his lover, as scary as it was, pinning his hopes on a small blond woman and her family.

They said nothing more, deplaning silently along with the rest of the passengers. The boarding seeming longer than normal, anxiety giving it an aspect of impending doom. Chris took comfort in Lance's presence beside him, even with the younger man's sad countenance.

Lance brightened suddenly, catching sight of his aunt and her entire family waiting for them. He grabbed Chris' arm, pulling him toward the petite lady, her smile sunshine-bright.

Lance threw himself at her, the two of them hugging so tightly that Chris wasn't sure they could even breathe.

A warm hand of his shoulder pulled his attention away from the reunion. He turned to the smiling, balding man who had to be Lance's Uncle Rob. Chris liked him at once.

"Nice to finally meet you, Chris." Rob glanced over at his wife and nephew, still locked together and talking in low, urgent tones. "Don't worry about those two. They've always been kindred spirits, and it was inevitable that Karen and Dave would drive him away." Rob spoke of Lance's parents with more pity than anger, his affection for Lance coming through clear and strong. Rob turned back to Chris, turning him to the two boys standing behind his left shoulder.

"These are our sons, Cory and Shane." The taller of the two, Cory, stuck his hand out to shake Chris' firmly.

"Good to meet you, Chris. Hope you're bein' good to my favorite cousin." There was a faint stiffness in the boy's words.

"Cory." Rob's voice was soft, but firm as rock, as he eyed his older son.

Cory visibly wilted under that gaze, and turned back to curve a half-smile in Chris' direction. "Sorry, man. Just don't want to see Jamie hurt any more than he already has been."

"It's cool, man. I totally agree." Chris couldn't give the boy more than that, at least not until he knew him better.

Cory nodded and stepped back.

The younger boy was much lower key, watching Chris quietly from under blond eyelashes. Chris decided to approach him first.

"Lance calls you Pooh, but I'm guessing Shane is a little more appropriate." Chris smiled as he shook the boy's hand.

Shane blushed deeply, sending a glare at his brother when Cory snickered. "Shane is good," he agreed. Chris had a feeling that these still waters ran very deep.

"Chris?" Lance's deep voice spun Chris right around, 'where he found himself face-to-face with Patti. Her warm brown eyes held him for a long moment, and he had the feeling that his worth was being weighed, and measured. He looked a quick question at Lance, and his lover gave him an encouraging, if teary-eyed smile.

Patti surprised Chris by throwing her arms around him and hugging him tightly.

"I'm glad you brought him, Chris," she whispered in his ear. "Thank you."

A little dazed, he just nodded as she pulled away. Grabbing Lance's hand, Patti announced, "Time to get the baggage taken care of."

Yeah. For real.
