Chapter 6

Giggling and laughing the entire time Kristy told her friends the events of the past night, well some of them. She had ended up having to tell the story about six times because of interuptions and people logging in late for the discussion. After three hours on the computer she was exhausted again and decided to head off to bed before Michael got home. She showered and eased comfortably into her bed and was sound asleep. When Michael got home he slid in beside her and pulled her close. She woke from the movement.
"Glad your back" he whispered in her ear
"Me too" she said sleeply and curled comfortably against him. Before she fell off again she said a small prayer of thanks to God that she hadn't stayed in Jordan's room. At least she didn't have that to compare her married life too.
The next morning she settled back into normal life, even though she found it increasingly hard to ignore anything to do with Jordan. Her music was all him, something related to him, or songs that made her think of him. The people that she talked to the most had something to do with him, and not to discount the fact that every single time she talked to her girls in England they made her relive every moment she had that night. She had told them everything up until her conversation with Jordan on the stairs that began the biggest guilt trip she had ever experienced. She wanted so desperately to tell them but at this point she didn't think that they would believe her and she knew some of them wouldn't keep it quiet. All she wanted was perspective on the whole situation. It had only been two days and she couldn't help but want to see him again. She was trying her best not to show to Micheal that something was bothering her but when he made advances on her last night she bowed out reluctantly when flashes of her encounter with Jordan shot through her mind. How was she ever going to have sex with her husband again with out thinking of him. Would it ever be the same between them? A part of her wanted to think that after time it would all go back to the way it was but her very small realistic side thought that it would never be possible.

Jordan wanted to pound his head on the table in front of them. He hated this. He knew it came with the life that he had chosen but he didn't have to like it did he? In the back of his mind worry clouded his thoughts. Why hadn't she called? It could be so many things but he didn't have time to run through the possibilities. The engineer's mic clicked on in the booth.
"that sounded great Jordan, I think thats good on that one for now" he said over the headphones.
Thank god that was over. He had done his job and plowed his way through his two shows in Texas. He tried calling her three times while they were there but got no answer. When her voice mail kicked in he didn't know what to say so he just hung up. What was there to say? Hi, I know we just met and had that one night stand thing but can you please call me back. What an idiot. He was never good at this stuff and never had to really worry about it. Normally after nights like they had he would have had fifty or more messages from the girl that he would have to ignore. So what made this one so different? For the life of him he didn't know but she was all he could think about. Taking a much needed break from working he pushed out of the lobby doors and into the warm winter sunshine. He pulled out his cell and looked down at her name and number. He wasn't going to torcher himself over this. He had decided he was going to try one more time and then leave it alone. If she didn't answer this time he would leave a breif message and if she never called then he would just have to move on. He smiled to himself. He didn't like this side of the game. He took a deep breath and dialed her number again.
"Hello" she said all professional, like she didn't know who was on the other line.
"Been trying to call you" Jordan said after a moments pause
"Me? Really? Why?" She said with the biggest grin on her face. She had seen his number under missed calls several times but he had never left a message so she didn't call him back.
"what do you mean why?" Jordan said with a shocked laugh
"Well I just thought" Kristy began in a shy tone
"You really must think I am a complete low life" Jordan interupted in a dejected tone
"No, no I don't. It's not like that at all. I just thought, well you know" she rambled on nervously "that was really all" she finished quickly
"What do you mean, that was all" he said with a confused laugh
"Well to tell you the honest truth, I never thought I would hear from you again" she said as plainly as she could
"Never, why on earth would you think that?" he said completely shocked
"I have just heard rumors" she began
"Oh god here we go again with those damn rumors" he interupted in a forceful tone "listen, let me lay it all out for you. I have done that to girls before, and I am not going to even pretend like I haven't but this, this is so different" he finished with a heavy breath
"Different how?" she asked curiously and couldn't help but smile from ear to ear.
"Well, its really" he paused "Ok, you see, its like" he paused again and let out a frustrated breath
"You don't really know what this is do you?" she interupted with that same big smile
"No, not really" he said in a relieved voice
"I guess this is really hard to put into words" she said fidgetting with the seat
There was that silence between them again that she felt she was constantly trying to fill with subjects that wouldn't make her look like a complete freak. She heard him sigh and off in the distance she though she heard birds chirping
"So what are you doing today?" he asked hurriedly
"Just working" she shrugged to herself
"Working? what do you do?" he asked with surprising intrest in his voice.
"Nothing really, I just sell insurance" she said almost embarrassed
"Selling insurance? Really? That has to be hard, I have never sold anything in my life" he said with a laugh
"Sure you have" she said brightly "you sell yourself everyday"
"what?" he barked out shocked out of his mind
There was a long pause and he could almost feel her embarrassment through the phone.
"Jordan I didn't mean it that way" she said softly "I was just saying that when you do interviews and everything" she paused again
He laughed in an attempt to ease her frustration "I know what you mean, I have just never heard it put that way, but come to think of it, you are exactly right, I am everybodies whore most of the time" he said with his voice heavy with sarcasm
She paused again awkwardly "Jordan, I didn't mean to, I mean I shouldn't have said that" she sighed and he could feel her closing up "I just didn't think that my job could ever be as complicated as making music" she finished in a defeated tone
"You got it all wrong" he said with a laugh "making music isn't hard at all, its making good music where the challenge is"
She laughed like he had hoped she would "it doesn't seem too hard listening to all the crap they play on the radio today"
"Exactly" he said excitedly. He had brought her back into the conversation and he was finally feeling like she wasn't going to hang up on him. "See most of the public doesn't know what it takes to make one song, much less an entire album" he said getting up to pace around.
"I know, I can't even imagine writing the words and trying to make it all fit" she said with an awe in her voice that made him curious.
"Make it all fit, what do you mean?" he said intruged inspite of himself
"Well, I mean like the words to the music, then the beat and all of that has to fall in together. I just can't understand how you can take a song you have written and make it match the music that you have just come up with" she hurried on excitedly and he found himself grinning like a school boy, she was actually intrested in his favorite side of things.
"You know about music?" he asked when she finally paused for breath
"Yeah a little bit, I have been playing piano since I was seven" she said with a huge smile. She had always wanted to tell him this and now she was getting her chance
His heart almost lept into his throat "seven? really? wow you must be awesome" he said not really believing what he was hearing
She laughed "are you kidding, I am not that good. I can play pretty much anything with time and practice but I am bound by the notes on the page and you aren't" she said reverently
He stopped mid pace and stared at the phone. He had never really had anyone compliment him like that in his entire life. He could feel his chest swell with pride and a new confidence creep in that had really never been there before.
"I have never thought of it that way before" he said shyly
"are you kidding me?" she pushed on excitedly "you can play anything and not have to worry if you have the right cords or finger placement, you go strickly on the sound and flow of the music and that is" she paused for an excited breath "well to people who have never attempted the piano they don't understand, but that is just fucking amazing"
He had to sit down again. He couldn't believe he was hearing this from her. She was a fan and he had known that but he hadn't known that she was his fan. The fan that he had always really wanted to have. She was in love with his ability not what he had done or was going to do. She was amazed with his potential and his talent. His head felt light with the new confidence she had stirred in him.
"Jordan?" she said to the silence
"oh sorry, I was just thinking" he laughed "well I have to admit I was just basking in the glow of your praises"
"my praises?" she asked curiously. Oh god had she spoiled everything by playing the fan.
"yeah well to tell you the truth no one has ever actually praised my potential, just what I have done" he said with a grin
"your potential is what makes you different" she said almost to herself "what makes you special"
Special. Just hearing that word made a lump rise tightly in his throat. How long had it been since he had heard someone call him special and really meant it. For the life of him he couldn't remember and now this girl that he had met by chance had possibly given him enough confidence to tour and make albums for the next ten years. He swallowed hard again trying to keep the emotions from over taking him. He absently reached in his pocked and pulled out the necklace that he had been playing with constantly for the last two days. He staired down at the small silver initial. He could never have imagined that someone he had met so breifly would create such a longing inside of him.
"enough about me" his voice cracked slightly and he cleared his throat in an attempt to cover the emotion "lets talk about how talented you are" he said with a smile
"Talented? I am not talented at anything really" she said with a down cast to her voice
"Oh come on now, I am positive that you are talented at something" he said with that flirty smile again.
"I doubt that" she said with a laugh
They fell into a conversation that streatched on for over an hour. He couldn't believe how easy it was just to talk to her about nothing. She was so real to him. She didn't just automatically agree with him on stuff and a couple of times he found himself amazed and shocked when she had called him an idiot about what he had said. He had lost himself so much in her voice and the tread of the conversation he had completely forgotten where he was and what he was supposed to be doing. When Chad came out of the building with a pissed off expression on his face he quickly remembered.
"Jordan, what in the hell have you been doing out here for two fucking hours" he said pointing angrily at his watch
"Kristy, hold on" he said covering the phone with his hand and he saw Chad roll his eyes at the mention of her name "I am sorry man, I just lost track of the time" he said with a shrug
"we only have three hours of studio time left, so can you please come on" Chad said frustratedly
"Ok, ok, calm down" Jordan said rolling his eyes back at Chad
He put the phone back up to his ear "Listen I have to go. I completely forgot I was supposed to be working in the studio" he said with a small laugh as he watch Chad all but stomp child like back into the building.
"You do need to get that cute butt in there and get to working" she scolded playfully "I know a lot of people that are waiting on that album."
He sighed heavily "don't remind me, that is all I hear these days"
"well then get to work and we will shut up" she laughed again
"Ok, I will, I promise" he paused "I guess I will talk to you later then" he said with a smile he kicked absently at the dirt on the sidewalk.
"great" she said brightly "later then"
He felt like he should say more but he knew that Chad was waiting and this was costing him a lot of money "bye" he finished reluctantly
"bye" she said enthuastically and he was so relieved when he heard her hang up. He wasn't quite sure if he would be able to break the connection.
He walked back into the studio almost bouncing. Chad gave him an odd look when he walked up beside him.
"can we go back into the studio now" he said impatiently
"I am coming" Jordan sighed and smiled as he clutched at his cell phone.
Jordan had hoped that all the praise and confidence that Kristy had just interjected into him would inspire him to push on and finsh one of the few tracks they had left but it just wasn't happening. The work was slow and annoying as they mixed listened to the play back, remixed and then repeated the whole process. Jordan kicked at the sound board as he ripped off his head phones in frustration.
"where is your head today" Chad said annoyed as he took off his head phones to talk to him
"I don't know, its just not clicking for me" he said as he absently pushed at the nearest dial
"Could it be distractions" Chad said with a raised eyebrow
Jordan spun around quickly and shot Chad a heated look "I will have you know that she was actually giving me the encouragement to finsh this thing the entire time" he said defensively
"of course she was she's a fan remember" Chad said with a cocky glance
"its not like that" Jordan said as he looked away "I can't explain it to you but believe me its not like that at all"
"Jordan at this point I don't care what its like, you just really need to get your head back into the game" Chad said
"yeah I know" Jordan said absently "when is the next show" he asked as he looked up
"in two days, on Saturday. Why?" Chad said pushing out of his chair to streatch
"well I was thinking about asking Kristy to come" Jordan shrugged
"what is with this girl" Chad said looking over at him "I have never seen you like this before"
"I have never really felt this way before" Jordan said with that dopey grin again as he destractedly picked at his shirt
"well if you want to see her again then ask her to come" Chad said as he walked to the door "just hope she doesn't bring hubby along this time" he added with a smirk as he walked out
"asshole" Jordan glared as the door closed with a snap. He yanked his cell phone off the producers board and found her number. He called it not knowing if she would answer again. It rang and rang as he tapped his foot nervously. When her voice mail picked up he almost hung up but decided to leave a message.
"Hey Kristy its Jordan again, sorry to be such a stalker and call you back so soon but I was wondering if you were interested in coming to the show this saturday, call me back and let me know" he paused not knowing exactly how to finish it "Ok talk to you later". He smacked his head as he closed the phone. Why was he acting like a big dopey idiot. He had always felt so smooth with girls and now, now he wasn't sure what the hell he was doing.
