Chapter 6

The rain was as constant as Gerard’s fears about Jade. It had been five days now and he hadn’t heard from her. Sure, they weren’t an official couple but usually they called each other a few times a day. Now he felt a darker void that he had felt before he even met her. Pulling his hood further over his head, he fought through the New York crowds trying to reach his apartment.

If Gerry had felt miserable, it was nothing to how Jade felt. She had stood outside Gerard’s apartment for an hour in this rain. Upon returning home, she had dumped her bags and ran the whole way here. Now she was soaked through and in dire need of Gerard.
Her eyes scanned the streets for his face. She was almost ready to turn and go home, until she saw him. He hadn’t noticed her, he had his hood pulled down, but she recognised the coat. They had bought it last week, before she left. Knowing his walk and his height, she admired him, even when wet, he still looked like he owned the street. She noticed woman stopping to watch him, whether they recognised him or just understood he demanded respect.
Watching him stride toward the door, she jumped out of the doorway and watched the cigarette fall from his open mouth; she had no time to think of anything else as they ran towards each other.
Suddenly, without her expecting, he kissed her hard. Her heart thudded as he laid his lips upon her for the first time. She was certain this wasn’t perfect. They were both soaked and everyone was looking. It was all wrong but she couldn’t care less.

Once Gerard’s joy of seeing her again had worn off, he sat quietly in dry clothes by the fire. Jade sat on the couch; she felt she owed him an explanation but didn’t know what to say. Gerry was wishing he hadn’t kissed her like that; what if she didn’t want to kiss him? Now she would think it was ok to swan off without warning. Not that he was a possessive man, but he was worried about her and he missed her like crazy.

He felt her sit beside him, “Are you fire watching?”
Gerry turned slightly to look at her, “What? Fire watching?”
“Yeah, me and my dad used to fire watch all the time. He used to tell me stories of fire imps and pixies. I would watch the fire and wait for them.” Jades eyes misted over.
“Mmm”
“Gerry, are you ok?” Jades stomach dropped, she knew something was wrong and she knew what it was, but neither wanted to bring it up.
”Yeah, I’ll live. How about you? How’s your father?” “Well,” Jade began, but was interrupted by Gerry.
“I take it that where you went there were no phones, and well, your mobile must have broken, hey?” Gerry stood up suddenly, knocking Jade off his arm as he did. Anger was coursing through him.
“Gerard!”
“Don’t Gerard me, do you have any idea how I have felt this past week? I had no idea where you were and when you were coming back. I have never felt so stupid in all my life. It’s clear you don’t care for me at all, Jade. Otherwise you would have called.”
“I do care for you…”
“No, you don’t. I have been seeing you for a month and you have never even kissed me. The first time we kissed was today and why? Because I stupidly thought if I could give you something to care about then you might show more interest!”
“Oh don’t turn this around” Jade stood up, her eyes flaming. It knocked Gerry off course, she looked so sexy when furious. “Yes, I had to visit my father. Yes, alright, I should have called you , but don’t you dare say I don’t care for you. How dare you? I haven’t even unpacked yet! I just stood outside for a whole damn hour waiting for you, and now you are being cold with me.”
Gerry glared at her; she glared back, “I have felt so abandoned these last few days, Jade. I have never felt so helpless in my life and you pop up and think its all ok, and we can sit and talk about bloody fires like you didn’t hurt me.”
“You self centred bastard. Don’t you even care that I’ve been through hell? Do you think I wanted to go back to my parent’s damn home? No Gerry, I wanted to be here with you. But not now.” Jade grabbed her coat, and headed for the door.
Gerry practically jumped over the couch and grabbed her, he held her against the wall and stared at her; she could see anger in his eyes but her own mirrored his. Suddenly their lips found each other. Jade dropped her coat and fell into his arms. Their kisses were passion, the pain of not seeing each other, the pain of having to scream at somebody you admire and care for. Gerry’s hands rolled over her back like a wave. She groaned and leant into his neck. Wasting no time, she kissed his ears and nibbled his neck softly.
Gerry leaned in and sighed in her ear, “I want you, Jade.”
Jade kissed him and looked into his eyes, “I’m yours.”
