Chapter Six
Chapter Six
They gathered up some extra clothes from Rob's closets and then waited for the call from one of the pilots to say they were on their way. When the call came they went out to the back of Rob's house, in the only spot big enough for them to land. Brody separated them into groups. Rob, Pompey, Josie, Brad & Nancy in one Chopper and Himself, Grace, Renee and Hank in the other. He figured with the men separated it would allow for better protection for the women, in case anything went wrong. He left Pompey in charge of the small group and went down to get Brad, he was shocked by the site that greeted him. At least 30 of them were on the other side of the gate. When they saw him they went from being being oblivious to anything to pressing up against the gates, reaching their arms through and hissing loudly. One small woman got knocked down and the others just stood on her, Brody could see her head was at a strange angle and blood was coming from her nose and mouth but she just seemed to keep trying to reach toward him.
"Brad?" He called out.
"Yeah." Brad answered coming out of the gatehouse.
"Let's go. They should be here any minute. Good thing too." Brody said gesturing toward the gate and street as he saw several more of them making their way towards the gates.
"Yeah it's fucking creepy. Why do their eyes look like that?" Brad asked, locking eyes with a large man whose stomach had a huge gaping hole, with shredded skin and clothes mixed together, Brad could actually see inside his stomach and had to press down on the vomit that started to rise in his throat.
"I don't know, you hear that?" Brody asked tilting his head to the sky. He thought he heard the choppers.
"Fuck yeah. Let's go" And they ran up to the backyard.
One chopper landed while the other circled around, Rob's group got on quickly and were up in the air and watched the scene below as the next chopper loaded up. The road that was usually full of steady traffic was empty excpet for the infected people making their way towards Rob's house. As the second helicopter rose, Rob's pilot started flying west, over the city. They looked out the windows at the horror that was Los Angeles. They could see huge mobs of people pounding on cars and buildings.
"There must be people there." Rob said quietly. At one point they saw a person running down a street with about 15 others chasing them and then covering the person who's arms were waving wildly about, trying to fight off their attackers.
"Oh God." Josie cried and buried her head into Pompey's shoulder. There were some houses on fire, police cars and fire trucks seemed to be abandoned on the streets, door open.
"It's Hell on Earth." Hank told them all then then made the sign of the cross.
There wasn't a lot of talking on the way to Las Vegas. Most of them sat praying or thinking about loved ones. Rob felt a huge ache in his heart for his dogs. He knew he would probably never see them again, he worried they would starve to death, despite him and Hank emptying all the dog food they had out onto the ground in back of the house. He was worried the infected people would attack the dogs. It broke his heart to think that he had abandoned them but the pilots said the dogs wouldn't fit. They were already pushing weight capacity as it was, he knew on a rational level he did the right thing. But as a person who loved his dogs like children he felt as though he had killed them himself. He just hoped it was over quickly for them. Maybe they had it better, what would happen to this group? He wondered, what if the dogs had an easier fate awaiting them.
"We are approaching Las Vegas. We need to you to exit right away and clear the area, we are refueling and heading back for some more survivors." The pilot explained as the lights of the Vegas strip started to appear. The airport the landed in was teeming with activity. The city was emptying out, people were in a panic and wanted as far from the west coast as possible. There was a man waiting for Rob and his group when the helicopters landed.
"Mr. Williams. I am Desmond Hart, manager of Elite Airways. When the others are here I can take you directly to your plane. It is gassed up and ready to leave."
"That's great news. Thank you so much." Rob answered and felt a bit of relief for the first time since the freeway in Las Angeles. Had it only been earlier that morning?
"We need to get you on the plane, there are reports that there are people who have been bitten and are on their way here. If they make it, it could possible lead to more infections. I myself am leaving very shortly."
"So is it spread through the biting then?" Brody asked, joining the group.
"That's what the Centre for Disease Control is saying. They are advising you avoid the zombies if you can." Desmond answered him
"Zombies?" Renee repeated.
"The dead come back to life. That's a zombie and that's what they are being called." Said Desmond.
"This isn't a horror movie." She said, shaking her head.
"It sure feels like one." Desomond said motioning for them to follow.
