Chapter 7

When she got back to the car she let out a frustrated sigh as she saw her cell laying absently in the front seat. She had forgotten to take it with her yet again. She put her grocery bags in the trunk and got into the front seat.
"Damn it" she said out loud as she saw the missed call flashing "No one ever wants to talk to me except when I forget my damn cell phone" she said angrily as she punched the button to see the number. She had a place a hand to her mouth when it was Jordan's number on the screen. She was even more shocked when she saw that apparently he had left a message.
"Maybe this is a step in the right direction" she said with a smile as she entered her password to her mailbox.
When she listened to the message she really couldn't believe her ears. She hit repeat and replayed the message again. He wanted her to come to the show in Connecticut on Saturday. She sighed and held the phone to her chest as she looked around. Could she go? Should she go? She was so excited she could barely contian herself but part of her knew it was so wrong. She shouldn't be excited about going to see a man that wasn't her husband. She thought of Michael and how their relationship had steadily declined since his recieving the promotion to Detective. He was rarely home and never seemed to want or have the time to make for her any more. When he did, she always felt like she was having to put her life on hold for him. She could see it in his eyes too. The look he once had for her was gone and she felt that they were just now going through the motions of a life they thought that they were expected to lead. Her attention shifted back to the phone call that Jordan had just left. Here was a man that she had been interested in through most of her life and now for some strange but exciting reason he was actually interested in her too. She knew that she had to see if this was for real or just some easy hook up he thought he had aquired. What did she have to loose? There was no way that Michael would ever find out unless she wanted him too, so she thought she would try to see if this was going anywhere other that the one night stand of her dreams. She took a deep breath and dailed his number. It rang three times and then to her surprise he picked up.
"Hey girl" he said brightly
"Hey yourself, I just got your message" she said with a smile
"and?" he asked curiously
"well, Connecticut is a long way for me but I have never been there so it should be fun" she said almost shaking with excitment.
"what about" Jordan began with a down cast to his voice
"Don't worry about that" she said interupting him "I will take care of it" she added guiltily.
"Great, I will have a ticket for you at the airport and will get Chad's wife to send you the details tonight" Jordan said his voice picking up with excitement
"Good, I am so looking forward to seeing a proper Jordan show this time" she said with a smile
"Well I hope I don't disappoint you then" he said with a laugh
"For some reason I am sure you won't" she said with a devilish grin on her face
"If I don't get a chance to talk to you before, I will see you on Saturday then" he said
"Great, I will call you if anything changes or if I have any problems" she said and really couldn't believe she was doing this, she must be out of her mind.
"Bye, until Saturday" he said quietly
"I can't wait" she said with a gasp and hung up the phone.
She sat for another minute in her car fighting the urge to run out into the parking lot and scream to anyone who would listen that she had just got off the phone with Jordan Knight. Her first instinct as always was to tell her girls in the UK every last detail but she knew that wasn't possible. The main thing was her fear that they wouldn't believe her and lurking behind that was the fact that she didn't know if this would go anywhere so she didn't want to look like a stupid groupie. She finally got the strength to actually start the car and headed home with a nervous stomach. She knew that she could cover the trip with an excuse of having to go somewhere on business which wouldn't be unreasonable but she feared that Michael would be able to register her excitement and question it. She pulled up in the yard and steadied herself before she got out. She had to do this right or he would suspect that something was going on. He was a dectective and was trained to sniff out liars. She grabbed up the groceries and made her way into the house.
"How was your day" he said as he took the bags from her.
"Just great" she huffed out sarcastically as she put the others down. She began putting things away telling him about her crappy work day as she moved around.
"and to top it all off Kelly can't go to the regional meeting in Connecticut because of her daughter so she is making me go on the last minute" she huffed out.
"Connecticut, really? Why do you have to go there?" he said stopping what he was doing.
"I told you its the regional meeting and someone from our office has to be there" she said gesturing around absently "its only for half a day on Saturday so it won't be too bad, but I hate the fact that I have to go up there just for that shit" she said as she closed the cabinet in pretend frustration.
"Yeah that does suck" Michael said and she read no suspsion in his voice
"The home office is emailing me my electronic ticket tonight and I leave on Saturday morning" she said as she put away the bags from the groceries
"Well you will only really be gone one night so thats not too bad" he said pulling her into a hug
"Yep only one night" she said with almost regret as she laid her head on his chest.
She got the details of her flight in an email from Jenni that night. She printed out her ticket and stuck it in her purse for safe keeping and then deleted the email. She wasn't taking any chances. When Saturday arrived Michael insisted on taking her to the airport and she finally gave in. He kissed her by at the terminal and waited until she went inside. The guilt seemed to weigh her down as she approached the counter. She stopped and looked down at the ticket. What in the hell was she doing? she thought angrily. She can't do this. She really should not have even considered it. Why was she rushing off to see someone that wasn't even her husband and worse was married himself? This was crazy. She was married, she had made her choice as to who she wanted to live with for the rest of her life and she should stay with that. This wasn't fair to Michael or really anyone. But, she thought in the back of her mind, if she would have known that Jordan would be interested in her would she have chosen Michael? The thought made her almost sick. How could she be this way? She was so lost in the battle for her mind that she didn't notice the ticket agent walk up beside her.
"Oh mam you check your bag right here" she said pulling her ticket out of her hand and taking her bag.
Kristy allowed herself to be guided to check in with out resistance and once it was done she resigned herself to the fact that she was commited now and she just should see what happened this weekend if anything.
The plane ride was short and when she got to the airport she collected her bag and made her way out to the street. She knew that Jordan wouldn't be waiting on her so she pulled out the address to the club and gave it to the nearest taxi driver she could find. She was so nervous over there she completely forgot about doing any site seeing even out of the window right next to her. She knew she was way too early for the show but hopefully the club would be open and someone there would be able to tell her where the nearest and safest hotel was. When the cab pulled up she leaned in and payed him. He drove off and left her standing in the parking lot almost shaking with anticipation.

Jordan stepped into the club and blinked his eyes to adjust them to the low light. He looked around and his heart jumped as he saw her sitting at the bar. He stood rooted to the spot as Chad and Bubba pushed past him. She was chatting animatedly to a tall slender bartender with peroxide blonde hair. He saw the look of recognition the bartender gave him and he watched her lean in and say something to Kristy. He couldn't help but smile with amusement as he saw Kristy's body stiffen and she slowly turned around to look in his direction. Her tenative smile was all he needed for his heart to begin beating a million miles a minute. She seemed really nervous and he wondered if he looked the same to her as he just stood looking at her. He had wondered if it would be the same between them as it had a week ago. Part of him wanted to find out, the other part wanted to just live in the dream world where there was no rejection. After of moment of just staring at each other she cocked her head and made a come here gesture and sent him a laugh that he thought would make his knees go weak. Looking at those beautiful dimples that shown in the smile that absolutely drove him crazy and he started across the room trying to be as causual as possible. He was shocked to see her get off the stool and walk to meet him half way. This was a good sign he hoped. He hadn't had a girl make him feel this way in a long time he thought absently as he watched her cover distance between them. For the first time he felt alive and actually excited for the future. When she reached him he threw his arms around her and pulled her into a tight hug.
"Thanks so much for coming" he whispered in her ear and felt her stiffen
She leaned back to look at his face "I wouldn't miss it for the world" She said as she searched his eyes.
The sound of her voice coupled with the musky orange flower scent of her perfume made his insides tighten with the same desire that filled him the first night they were together. He had hoped it would be the same and now that it was he wasn't sure what that meant. He pulled her back into the hug and kissed her check.
She laughed as he continued to hold her in an almost death grip.
"Hey now you have to let me go you know" she said over his shoulder
"hey you two, stop that shit now" Chad's voice echoed around them as he spoke into the stage microphone.
Kristy pushed back from him and looked around in either embarrassment or guilt he wasn't sure which.
"what is it?" Jordan said with a laugh
"oh sorry I just didn't think that you wanted anyone to see us, well, you know" she said with a nervous gesture
"well I don't think we are ready for the cover of people magazine just yet but no one else is here but us and the staff so its ok" he said pulling her into another hug. For reassurance he told himself not because he wanted to touch her again.
"Excuse me Mr. Knight, do you think we can work here" Chad said from behind his turntables as he leaned into the microphone again
"Ok Ok I am coming" Jordan said with an annoying gesture up at him.
Kristy returned to her bar stool and watched them go through sound check. Jordan kept looking over at her during the ordeal to see if she was watching him at all. Everytime he looked over there she was smiling back up at him usually singingly along to the words. When he was testing out the sound on his keyboard he looked over at her.
"is there a song you want me to do tonight?" he said into the mic
"yes" she said back with a smile "you never sing Baby I Believe in You, and I love that one" she said walking over to the end of the stage
"Oh god I am not sure I remember that one" he said trying out a few chords on the keyboard. After a minute of messing around he got the tune right and ran throught it for her. He laughed when she placed a hand over her heart.
"ok so now all you need is an open shirt and a fan and my fantasy is done" she said as she pretended to pass out by rolling back her eyes.
"so that sounded ok?" he said with a grin
"you always sound ok, even if you were singing Old McDonald" she said with a flirty smile
He played the first few cords of the nusery rhyme and heard her and Chad start laughing.
"everybody sing" chad said into the mic as he laughed.
Bubba entered from back stage "everything is set for back there" he said to chad
"so are we ready to go" Jordan said back to him
"yeah if you are" Chad said
"you wanna go back and chill with us" Chad said looking over at Kristy
"Yeah I guess, if thats ok" she looked around at all of them "I have nothing keeping me here" she said with a shrug
Bubba heaved a sigh "I will have to bring the car around back because there are already people outside" he said as he fished around for the car keys.
"really?" Jordan said in amazement
"maybe I should just stay here then" Kristy said nervously
"why? you don't want to go?" Jordan said dejectedly
"No its not that, I do want to go, I just don't want to cause problems" Kristy said with a hand on his shoulder
"You won't be causing problems" Chad said "so come on, do you have your stuff or do you already have a room" he asked looking around
"No I didn't really know where to stay, I took a cab from the airport" Kristy said walking over to the bar and picking up her bag
"Good you can just stay with us then" Chad said and Kristy saw the surprised look that both Jordan and Bubba shot him.
They quickly walked out back and piled into the car while Bubba put her bag in the back and climbed in.
She rode in silence with the rest of them as they pulled out onto the street. Looking back she could see the curious girls glance after the SUV. She couldn't help her excitement as she looked at all of them. She was in their shoes only last week. Man how things changed fast. She absently shook her head.
"what?" Jordan said with a questioning smile
"Nothing" she said shaking her head and smiling back
When they arrived at the hotel she tossed her bag into the room that Jordan directed her too and flopped on the couch. She almost jumped when Jordan flopped down beside her.
"I am so fucking tired" he yawned through his hand
"Yeah I know" she said leaning her head over on the arm of the sofa and closing her eyes
"Well I am taking a nap" he announced to the room and she jerked up right when he layed his head in her lap
"Don't mind do you" he said grinning up at her
"Not at all" she said sarcastically
"Good" he mumbled as he closed his eyes.
After a few minutes she felt him relax and his breathing ease. She leaned her head over the side again and dozed off herself. She had found herself in weird dream when a buzzing on her leg made her jerk awake. She felt Jordan jump too.
"Damn" he said as he slapped at a button on his vibrating cell "I hate when that happens"
She laughed through a yawn "Yeah me too"
He sat up beside her and stretched "well I need a shower before I sweat like a pig on stage" and in a swift move kissed her hard on the mouth as he got up
"Be right out" he called over his shoulder as he went into the bedroom.
This was too much for her. What were they now, playing the happy couple. What had she gotten herself into. She had to admit it was damn confusing but she liked it even if she had no idea where it was going. She walked out onto the walk way in front of the hotel room and let the icy wind cool her face. She still couldn't believe that she was here, in his room, actually with him at this moment. She turned around and proped her elbows on the railing as she leaned back looking back at the row of doors that led into the rooms. She couldn't help but light a cigeratte. He was taking a shower right now and it was all she could do to resist the earge to jump in there with him. She was so pissed that she still felt so awkward around him. Why couldn't she just relax and be herself. She absently smoked her cigeratted as she thought of everything that had happened recently. She had almost hoped that when she saw him again her stomach wouldn't flutter like it had the first time. It had actually been even worse this time. She saw Jordan open the curtian covering one of the windows and then appear out of the corresponding door holding a Boston Red Soxs sweat shirt that looked like it had seen better days.
"Hey, what you doing out here?" he said with a small grin as he walked over to her
"needed some air" she said smiling playfully back at him and tossing her cigeratte over the railing
"Man, and I came out of the shower in a towel just for you" he said wrapping his arms around her still holding the sweat shirt. He smelled so wonderful. That just out of the shower smell and his hair was still damp.
"For me?" she asked dramatically "You did that just for me? I wonder on earth why?" she said with a hand to her chest while she giggled.
He laughed and pulled her into a hug. "Cold?" he asked in her ear
"Yeah a little" she shivvered as she snuggled further into him
"Got this for you" he said making a display of holding up the sweat shirt.
She laughed as she took it from him "where did you get it a garage sale" she said examining the stains and faded areas.
"A garage sale?" he said throwing out his arms "I can't believe you said that" he said mocking hurt. He watched her slide one of his most favorite posessions on the face of the earth over her head and had to laugh when she emerged with her hair sticking out everywhere.
"You really need to do something about this hairdo of yours" he said steping over and attempting to smooth down her short hair
She batted his hand away annoyingly as she used her hand to brush through her hair. She snuggled into the oversized shirt and could smell him in the worn fabric.
Laughing she pulled up the hood and tightened it around her face.
"What in the hell are you doing" Jordan said grabbing the strings out of her hands
"Being stupid I guess" she said shrugging as she pulled the hood down reveling her hair standing on end again.
She ran her fingers through it as she watched him stare off into the parking lot.
"What is it" she said turning around and laying a hand on his arm
"hugh" he jumped.
She laughed "sorry didn't know you were lost in JK land"
"what?" he said with a laugh as he shook his head
"off in your own world" she said turning to him
"oh sorry, just thinking" he said almost shyly
"about what?" she asked with a curious smile
"I was just thinking of how hot you look in that sweatshirt of mine" he said with a grin as he pulled her into a hug
"Hot?" she said as she frowned down at the ratty sweatshirt "I don't see how I can be hot in this thing"
He frowned at her "how can you dis one of my most prized posessions" he said pulling at the sweat shirt
She backed away from him in shock "really? this old thing" she said looking down at it
He just laughed "yeah its been everywhere with me" he said pulling her into an embrace again
"everywhere" she said with a sly grin
"Yeah" he said softly as he stepped into her.
He smiled as she took in a quick breath. He reached up and put a hand on her face and smiled at her. "Thanks again for coming" he said gently as he leaned in to kiss her.
When his lips met hers she couldn't help but wrap her arms around his neck. She played with his damp hair as his kiss deepened.
"Oh god not again" she heard from behind them and hastily broke away from Jordan. He laughed against her head as he kissed her hair when she turned away from him in shock.
"oh hey Chad" she said trying to control her anger at the interuption
"Everytime I leave you two alone this happens" he said walking up with his hands out
"Yeah well you would think that you could take the hint" she heard Jordan say under his breath
"What?" Chad said with raised eyebrows
"Nothing" Jordan said shaking his head as he eased his arms around Kristy's waist. He felt her lay back into him.
"So are we ready for tonight" Chad said leaning up beside them on the railing
"Ready as I will ever be" Jordan sighed
"well I think we should start heading that way then you go on in about an hour" he said checking his watch
Bubba stepped out of the room as if he was listening to the conversation "are we ready?" he asked curiously as he glanced at the outfit Kristy was wearing
"Oh god no" Kristy said looking down in horror "I can't go to the show looking like this" she said pealing off the sweatshirt as she walked in the room
"Remember you don't have to impress me" Jordan called after her with a laugh
"Give me 15 minutes" she said with a gesture as she closed the door.
"We can't wait on her" Chad said darkly to Jordan after about 10 minutes
"Yeah we are cutting it close" Jordan sighed
"I will take you guys over and she should be ready when I get back" Bubba said
"Ok" Jordan shrugged
"Let me tell her the plan and I will be right back" he said tossing Chad the keys to the rented SUV
Bubba dropped Chad and Jordan off at the club and hurried back to the hotel for Kristy. When he pulled up she was waiting in the parking lot for him. He got out and opened the door for her. She laughed as she got in.
"They make it alright?" she asked curiously
"Yeah" Bubba said with his eyebrows raised "Just fine"
She was quiet for a few minutes. Her question burning inside her throat "Bubba is this all a joke?" she finally blurted out
"What?" he said with a confused laugh "What do you mean a joke?"
"How many girls has he done this with?" she asked turning around in her seat to watch his expressions
He shrugged as he drove "None that I can think of" he started and when she rolled her eyes he continued "I am not going to lie there have been those random after the show gone in the morning type of things but never like this" he finished patting her leg. "You look nice tonight by the way" he said with a smile
"thanks" she said distractedly
They pulled up behind the noisy club and Chad came running out. Bubba and Kristy jumped out of the SUV in alarm.
"What is it?" Bubba asked in a concerned rush
"Everything is fucked up, the promoter isn't here and they have no idea who has paid and who hasn't, and no one can get intouch with him" Chad said running a hand through his hair.
"So they aren't letting anyone in" Kristy said concerned
"No because they don't know who paid in advance" he said gesturing with his hands "we can't have another show go wrong, this is a fucking mess" he finished looking up at the sky in frustration
"Ok, who did the ticket presale" Kristy said trying to think quickly
"What?" Chad asked sharply
"the ticket presale, who did it? Ticketmaster, etixs who?" she said motioning with her hands
"I think it was ticketmaster why?" he asked curiously
"and what was the promoters name" she said not bothering to answer him
"Tim Kline, why do you need to know all of this?" he said as he watched her walked past him and through the back door to the club. He and Bubba followed her curiously.
She met Jordan in the hall. "Did Chad tell you the craziness" he asked as she all but walked past him with out a word. He exchanged a worried look with Chad who just shrugged and continued to follow her. She marched through the club and up to the bar where the bartender she was talking to earlier this evening was working.
"Have you got a fax machine here?" she asked as she pulled out her cell phone
"Yeah" the bartender replied "its in the office" she said with a motion of her head
"Do you know the number?" Kristy said as the others continued their confused looks
The bartender searched around for a list of numbers and recited it to Kristy as she wrote it down on the back of a napkin.
"Thanks" Kristy said as she dialed information on her cell
"Ticketmaster please" she said confidently to the recording. After a moment she scribbled down another number
"What the hell is she doing" Jordan asked Chad who just shrugged as he watched her dail a number.
She pressed numbers in answer to the prompts she was given and then tapped her fingers on the bar as she waited. When she finally got an answer from a human she spoke confidently and politely into the phone.
"Yes my name is Kristy and I am the assistant of Tim Kline" she paused as she was acknowledged "he ran off tonight and forgot his presale list for a show he is doing and I need to see if you can fax me that as quickly as possible" she said with a chirp in her voice "oh that would be so great thanks" she said with a smile "yeah you can just fax it straight to the club's office, I am right beside the machine" she said almost chirply "thank you so much you are a life saver" and she recited the number.
After a few minutes the list of presales came out of the small fax machine and Kristy walked out of the office with it.
"Now you and Jordan go and get ready and Bubba and I will let everyone in" she said gesturing them away.
After thirty minutes the club was packed and Bubba and Kristy were counting out the money that they had recieved from door and meet and greet sales. They counted out the portion owed to the owner and then took the rest back to Chad who was getting read to go on stage. Kristy smiled at him as she walked up.
"Here you go" she said handing him the envelope of money " and here is the list of meet and greet people but they are wearing pink arm bands so you will know who's who" she said as she passed that over.
"You are a life saver you know that" he said with a grin as he took what she held out
"Yeah, yeah, yeah" she said waving him away as she walked off. She was way to excited about seeing the show to worry about his prasies now.
