Chapter 71

"Souls are feeling heavy
And faith is growing thin.
Fears are getting stronger,
You can Feel them on the rise.
Hopelessness got some by the throat,
You can see it in their eyes.
I said how come."

"So who won?" Carrie asked as Kelly sat down at the table for lunch, Alex crawling tiredly onto her lap.
"I did," Kelly smiled.
"Kell," Carrie fussed.
"What? I told her I wasn't going easy on her. It was close as hell though, let me tell ya. Girl's got spunk."
"Yea, well it looks like you wore all that spunk out," Carrie laughed, nodding to Alex who was nearly sound asleep.
"Munchkin," Kelly shook her gently. "Come on sweetie, you've got to eat something so you can take your medicine. Then you can take a nap, ok?"
"I'm not really hungry," Alex shook her head, pulling back to look at Kelly.
"You feeling ok?" Kelly asked, worriedly, bringing a hand up to feel her cheeks which were cool.
"I'm tired," she replied, rubbing her eyes cutely.
"Well, you need to eat something," Kelly said gently.
"Can't I eat after I take a nap?" she asked, her voice cracking as her eyes teared up.
Kelly felt her heart break. She looked up at Dr. Lansing who shared her same worried expression, but nodded.
"Y-yea, sure munchkin," Kelly smiled nervously. "Come on, I'll bring you up."
Alex wrapped her arms firmly around Kelly's neck as the Texan stood and carried her up the stairs to the spare bedroom she was staying in. She carefully placed her down on the bed, pulling the blankets around her snugly.
"Are you sure you're feeling ok?"
"Yea," Alex smiled weakly, the look in her eyes giving her away.
"Ok," Kelly swallowed hard as she leaned down to kiss her forehead. "Well, get some sleep. I want a second go round at Guitar Hero, ok?"
She felt Alex nod.
"Sweet dreams only, munchkin. Nothing else," she whispered as she watched the small girl fall into a heavy sleep.

Carrie walked into Kelly's room, carrying a plate of food, knowing the Texan would be hungry after not having returned to the table from putting Alex down for a nap.
"Kell?" Carrie questioned worriedly, placing the plate on the vanity before she hurried across the room to where Kelly was sitting on the edge of the bed, her head in her hands, her shoulders shaking. "Kelly, what's wrong? Is Alex ok?"
"No," Kelly shook her head, looking up at her, her eyes red. "She's not. She's getting worse, I know she is."
"Sweetie, you don't know that for sure," Carrie said gently as she sat beside her, pulling her onto her lap. She guided them over to the head of the bed and leaned back against the pillows. "She may just be tired from having a long morning. I saw y'all. You were playing hard."
"And the other mornings?" Kelly questioned. "She's never been tired like this before. Not since we first came here."
"Did she say she was feeling ok?"
"Yea," Kelly sniffed.
"Then why are you doubting her?" Carrie asked, rubbing soothing circles onto her back.
"Because she's just like me, Care. She'll never admit to it, but you can see it in her eyes."
Carrie wrapped her arms tighter around her, "I'm sorry Kell."
She took a shaky breath, "Maybe I should just take a nap too. I mean, I could wake up and find out you're totally right, right?"
Carrie gave a half-hearted smile, "Of course...you want me to stay?"
Kelly nodded, and Carrie laid down with her, holding her close, praying that they were wrong about this, but knowing deep in her gut that they weren't.
