Chapter 74
+++++++++
"Everything seemed okay when I started out the other day,
Then the rain came pouring down,
And now I'm drowning in my fears,
And as I watch the setting sun,
I wonder if I'm the only one."

"How much longer?" Carrie asked, staring out the window. They had put a movie on, but she was unable to concentrate.
"We're nearly half-way there," Jason assured her.
"Only half-way?" Kelly questioned.
"Yea, why?"
"I gotta pee."
"You sure?"
"Yea, I think I know when I gotta go."
"Alright," Jason nodded, pulling off into an exit and into the nearest gas station. "Ok, everybody out. I'm not sure when the next stop will be."
Dr. Lansing eyed Alex nervously.
"What?" Kelly asked.
"Unless she has to go, she shouldn't go in there. There are so many germs, and right now she doesn't have much left to fight off even the smallest cold."
Kelly squirmed in her seat.
"I don't have to go," Carrie spoke up.
"You sure?" Kelly asked.
"Yea, positive," Carrie nodded, climbing into the back.
Kelly carefully handed over the sick child, helping Carrie get comfortable, "You got her?"
"Yea, go on."
Kelly gave her a small smile as she followed Dr. Lansing and Jason into the gas station.
Carrie looked up as Ashley took her seat that she had vacated in the middle of the vehicle.
"You don't have to go?"
Ashley shook her head, "No, I guess we're the only smart ones that went before we left."
Carrie gave a slight laugh.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Yea," Carrie nodded.
"What did you tell her? Before we got into the car?"
Carrie raised an eyebrow, "I thought you weren't supposed to question it."
"You heard that?"
"Yea, but don't worry, Kelly was pretty zoned out, I doubt she did."
Ashley nodded.
"I just told her that she needed to relax. We were going to get there as soon as humanly possible, Jason would make sure of it. I told her she was doing all that she could. I, um, I told her that it was up to God now, and the only thing left to do is pray."
But Ashley shook her head, "No, see, I could've said that, and she wouldn't have reacted the way she did with you."
"It's not so much what you say as it is how you say it," Carrie shrugged. Naturally, she had left out the part of her promising Kelly that she would be by her side through all of it, holding her hand during the day, holding her in her arms at night, giving her everything she needed. "You're her best friend. What is she scared of?"
"Small spaces?"
Carrie shook her head, "More than anything else in the world, what is she afraid of?"
"Being alone," Ashley said softly.
"Exactly," Carrie nodded.
"She told you that?" Ashley asked, shocked.
"It's not that hard to figure out," Carrie replied, thinking of all the times Kelly had asked for her just to hold her or just to be there with her. "And with Alex...you know Alex means everything to her. She views her as a little sister, right? So, she's about to lose her, what do you think's going through her mind right now?"
Ashley nodded in realization.
"She just needs to know that she's not going to be left alone. I promised her that."
Ashley nodded once more, looking out the window as the three others returned. Kelly climbed in the backseat, and Carrie carefully handed Alex over to her.
"You're gonna go now?" Kelly asked with a slight smirk.
"How'd you know?"
"Because I know you. Now go ahead. Jason's gonna walk with you. I didn't like the way the cashier was looking at us earlier."
Carrie smiled as she climbed out of the vehicle.
