Chapter 75

++++++++++

"Even if your hands are shaking,

And your faith is broken.

Even as the eyes are closin',

Do it with a heart wide open."

"Kelly?"

Kelly looked down to see two big green eyes staring up at her tiredly. She looked up to find everyone else asleep except for Jason who kept his eyes firmly on the road before him.

"Hey munchkin, you up?" she asked softly, her voice shaky.

"Where are we going?"

"We're going back to Tennessee."

She could see tears welling up in Alex's eyes, "I'm sorry."

"No, sweetheart, it's not your fault. It's ok," Kelly assured her.

"I shouldn't have lied to you," she shook her head.

"About what?"

"About feeling ok when I wasn't," she replied weakly.

"Hey, don't worry about it."

"I was just trying to be strong."

Kelly took a deep breath, bringing a hand up to gently wipe away a tear that was falling down Alex's cheek. "You know, you don't have to be strong all time."

"But you are," she pointed out, struggling to sit up on her lap.

Kelly helped her, "Trust me, I'm not."

"No, you are. You're never scared about anything."

"Munchkin, you are so wrong on that one," Kelly admitted softly.

Alex furrowed her brow, "You really get scared?"

"Yea," she nodded.

"What are you scared of?"

"Well, small spaces, I don't like those very much," Kelly shook her head, wrinkling her nose, making Alex giggle softly. "I'm also not really big on roaches. I'm not sure why; they just kind of creep me out."

"But, that's nothing big," Alex pointed out. "That's just being nervous. You're not really scared."

"Well," Kelly said carefully, wrapping her arms around the small child on her lap. "You being sick...that, that scares me."

"Really?" she asked softly.

"Well yea," Kelly nodded, her eyes stinging. "I mean, you're my buddy...you're my munchkin. It scares me to see you hurting."

"I don't want to scare you," Alex looked up at her with big puppy dog eyes as she reached up to wipe a tear off Kelly's cheek.

Kelly felt her heart melt.

"Kelly?"

"Yea munchkin?"

"Do you...do you believe in Heaven?"

Kelly smiled softly, "Absolutely."

"What do you think it's like?"

"Well, it's like the happiest place ever."

"You think they have ice cream cones?"

"Ice cream cones? They have ice cream mountains," Kelly raised her eyebrows for effect.

"Chocolate?"

"Well, yea, cause that's the best flavor. You know what else?"

"What?"

"They totally have Guitar Hero up there."

"Really?"

"It's like a nonstop Guitar Hero party," Kelly nodded

"What about doctors?"

Kelly shook her head, "Nope. No medicine either."

"I don't know about that."

"Well you don't need any," Kelly explained. "There's no tummy aches in Heaven."

Alex nodded, "You know, it doesn't sound like a bad place to be."

"Yea," Kelly agreed as Alex leaned back down into her, her eyes growing heavy.

"How much longer until we get to Tennessee?"

"Not much longer," she assured her. "Why don't you go back to sleep?"

She felt Alex nod against her shoulder, and she sighed, her head falling back against the head rest.

Kelly watched out the window, her knee bouncing nervously as she started to recognize the area they were driving through. They were nearly there.

She kissed the top of Alex's head as she felt the small child starting to wake in her arms, "We're here munchkin, don't worry."

Kelly watched as Jason pulled into the hospital's parking lot. He pulled to a stop in front of the emergency entrance, and Carrie and Dr. Lansing quickly jumped out, helping Kelly exit the vehicle with Alex still in her arms. They walked through the mechanical doors, immediately being greeted by Dr. Lopez who was standing there waiting.

"Hey," he gave a welcoming smile. "You made good timing."

"Jay drove as fast as he could," Kelly replied, still holding onto Alex tightly.

"Ok, we're gonna take her now, alright?" he said gently, stepping towards her.

Kelly tensed.

"Kelly," he soothed. "You know me. You know I will do everything in my power to help her, but you have to let her go so we can do our jobs."

Kelly nodded, reluctantly letting go of Alex, which was made even harder by her weak protests.

"Shh, munchkin," Kelly forced a reassuring smile, wiping Alex's tears as Dr. Lopez placed her in the wheelchair.

"I want to stay with you," she cried.

"I know, me too, but you have to go with them, ok? They're gonna make you feel better. I'm gonna come visit you as soon as they let me, I promise."

"Pinky swear?"

"Pinky swear," Kelly nodded, hooking their pinkies together.

"Kelly," Dr. Lopez interrupted.

"Ok," Kelly replied, standing and backing away. "Take care of her."

"You can come see her tomorrow morning, ok?"

"Ok," she watched as the two doctors wheeled her away. She felt Carrie step beside her, wrapping an arm around her waist. She turned into her, holding onto her tightly.

"I know," Carrie frowned, her lips barely brushing against her temple.
