The Damage Is Done

Title: Alchemy, Part 8: The Damage Is Done
Author: ChemicalMuse
Pairing: Frank/Mikey, Frank/Gerard
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Trying to repair the damage.

You don't know how long you've been sitting there, your back pressed against the bus, face resting against your knees. It's cold outside, cold and damp. Or maybe the damp is just because you can't stop crying.

Trying to get up almost makes you scream. You've been in that position way too long, and your muscles almost lock up when you try to stand. You manage to steady yourself on the side of the bus, almost limping around to the other side to reach the door. Thank god you can pull it open and force yourself up the steps.

Right now, all you want is to take a hot shower and crawl in your bunk. Not the one you've been sharing with Gerard. One of the bunks in the back, where you can be away from everybody. Alone.

WHOAH. There's somebody sitting there in the dark. Your eyes widen and your heart stops for a few seconds. Is it .... is it Gerard? You start to back away, praying you can run.

The small figure huddled on one of the seats by the window sniffles softly, and you let out a sigh of relief. Not Gerard. No.

It's Mikey.

He hasn't even seen you, you've been so quiet getting on the bus. Your voice is soft, but it sounds like you're yelling because the air is so still and quiet.

"Mikey."

He lets out a gasp and turns toward you, startled. His arms come up like he's trying to shield his face and your mouth drops open. It's dark on the bus, but there's enough light coming in through the windows from the street lamps for you to see the dark bruises on his thin arms.

You sink down onto the seat beside him, and he looks over at you without saying a word. There's a purpling bruise on his cheek, a trickle of blood at the corner of his mouth. His lips are trembling, and you know he's holding back a sob. His eyes are brimming with tears behind his glasses.

You reach out to touch his face, wanting him to know you're there, and that's when the tears start to fall. He can't meet your eyes, but you're pretty damn sure you know what's happened.

"Gerard?" All you can force out past the lump in your throat is that one word.

He nods, whispering, his voice a hoarse whisper. "H-he hit me ...." He sounds about ten years old. "When we were kids, we used to f-fight all the time .... but G-Gee never hit me."

You almost burst into tears yourself at the hurt in his voice. He sounds bewildered, like a lost child. He's not just hurting because somebody hit him. He's hurting because his brother did it.

Another slice of guilt to lay at your feet.

You wrap your arms around Mikey, let him lay his head on your shoulder and sob. You rest your cheek against his soft hair, closing your eyes and letting the tears leak out from under your eyelids. This is your fault. All your fault. You're hurting and Mikey's hurting, and there's nobody to blame for it but yourself.

What happened to you seems like it doesn't matter now. He's crying for his brother, for the person he's known all his life. The brother who's never before raised a hand to him and never hurt him. It's like he can't understand why.

You did this. You came between two people who've always been there for each other. And you don't know how to fix it. You don't even know if there's any way to fix it.

All you can do is sit there and hold him, and hope that you loving him can make up for what he's lost. And feel guilty as fuck that he's lost it because of you.
