Chapter 83

+++++++++

"At times I'd like to break you

And drive you to your knees.

At times I'd like to break through

And hold you endlessly."

Finally when the meeting had ended, Carrie stood up, catching the hospital's attorney before he could walk out, "Um, excuse me Mr..."

"Smith," he nodded with a smile. "Mr. Smith. And no, I'm not an assassin like in the movie."

Carrie smiled back, "I just had a quick question."

"Sure, go ahead."

"When you stopped Kelly from saying what she did, was it the same reason you stopped me from saying who I am?"

"Yea," he replied.

"Can I ask why?"

"Well, unfortunately, Kelly had it exactly right when she accused Alex's parents of being here only for money. That's what the hospital is afraid of."

"What does that have to do with us?"

"If they realize who you are, and how much time you've been spending with Alex, that's like a jackpot to them. You can bet they'd find any way possible to get money off the two of you."

"That's so sick," Carrie shook her head. "How could they capitalize on their own daughter's death like that?"

"That's just how some people are. I'm sorry. But don't worry, we are doing everything possible to prevent that from happening."

"Thanks," Carrie nodded.

"If either of you have any problems with Alex's parents, call me," Mr. Smith replied, giving her his card.

"Yes sir."

He nodded, holding the door open for her.

Carrie frowned, watching the scene down the hall. Jason's hands were on Kelly's arms, holding her back as Mrs. Reed started yelling.

"You self-righteous brat," Mrs. Reed glared, less than a foot away from Kelly. "How dare you criticize my love for my daughter!"

"Why isn't Jason getting her out of here?" Carrie asked, confused.

"She seems to be under control," Mr. Smith noted.

"She's not," Carrie shook her head, seeing the fire in Kelly's eyes all the way from where they were. "You don't think Mrs. Reed would try to get a rise out of her? I mean, you said she's only here for the money."

Mr. Smith's eyes grew wide, "We need to get her out of here."

Carrie quickly followed him down the hall, stepping right in front of Kelly, pushing her back slightly, "Kell."

"I'm just saying what I know," Kelly replied, looking over Carrie's shoulder at Alex's mother. "You know, I wouldn't be surprised if you smiled when you got the news. Yea, I bet you did. Nothing like a nice pay check to make you come around, huh?"

"Kelly, enough," Carrie frowned.

"You are so far out of line young lady," Mrs. Reed stepped towards her, being cut off by the hospital's attorney.

"Jason, Kelly's right," Carrie lowered her voice looking over the shorter Texan between them. "It's all about money with them. They're looking for any reason to get money out of her. Get her out of here."

Jason glanced at Mrs. Reed nervously, "Come on Kelly, let's go."

"No."

"Don't make me carry you," he replied, forcing her to turn around. He wrapped an arm firmly around her, tugging her down the hall, away from the commotion she had created, Carrie following right behind them.

Carrie went to climb into the back of the car with Kelly, but paused at the look of warning in her eyes.

"I'll sit in the front," Carrie nodded.

Jason and Carrie followed Kelly nervously into the house. Ashley stood from where she was sitting in the living room.

"Kelly, I heard, I'm sorry," she said softly, pulling her into a hug.

Kelly stood there, her arms pinned to the side, waiting for her to let go.

"Are you ok?" Ashley asked worriedly, pulling back.

"Yea, Ashley, I'm perfectly fine," Kelly deadpanned before turning to Carrie. "Maybe you should go home."

Carrie felt her heart sink as she watched Kelly walk away, headed towards her room.

"Come on in," Jason said gently, motioning for Carrie to walk into the living room.

Carrie sat down on the sofa, rubbing her eyes tiredly.

"What's going on?" Ashley asked as she and Jason sat down as well.

"Seven stages of grief right?" Jason frowned. "Isn't one of them anger?"

"Yea," Carrie nodded.

"What happened?" Ashley questioned.

"She had a meeting at the hospital to sort things out. Alex's parents were there. Kelly pretty much ripped them a new one," Jason explained.

"Kelly?" Ashley said, unbelievingly.

"You know how she can be when she's set off."

"Yea, and that was like what? Twice her entire life?"

"Well, make it three times now."

"She doesn't know how to take it," Carrie shrugged. "She's hurting, and Lord knows she's not good at dealing with things like that. She was just looking for a way to get it all out."

"From what I've heard, Alex's parents are as good of place as any for her to get her anger out on," Ashley replied.

"Except for the fact that the hospital's worried that they are trying to get money off of them, and may even try to get some off of Kelly as well, so her turning into Rocky 10, or whatever number it is now would not be a good idea," Jason sighed before turning to Carrie. "Do you need a ride home, or was that your car in the drive?"

"Um, actually, I'm gonna go talk to Kelly," Carrie replied.

"I don't think that's a good idea."

"Trust me, I'm the one she wants to talk to right now. Most likely to chew me out for stopping her, but still..."

Jason shrugged, "If you're up for it, go ahead, but don't say I didn't warn you."

Carrie nodded as she stood and made her to Kelly's room. She knocked on the door before opening it, her body tensed, ready to get yelled at as she slipped inside the room. Her shoulders dropped as she closed the door behind her.

Kelly was sitting on the floor at the foot of the bed, her knees pulled up to her chest, Mr. Bear held tightly in her arms as tears streamed down her cheeks.

"Kell?" Carrie said gently, walking to her and sitting before her.

"I'm sorry," she replied, her voice hoarse from crying. "I didn't mean it when I told you to leave."

"I know," Carrie nodded, scooting close enough to wrap her arms around her as her legs stretched out on either side of her.

"I didn't think it would hurt this much," Kelly admitted through the tears.

"What did you expect?" Carrie asked carefully.

"I miss her," Kelly shook her head, her eyes heart-breakingly open as she looked up at the country singer. "I miss her so much already, and it hasn't even been a day. How am I supposed to do this?"

"I'm sorry," Carrie replied. "I-I don't know what I'm supposed to say."

"I want...I want her to come back."

"Me too," Carrie whispered, running a hand through Kelly's hair before pulling her closer. She felt the shorter singer wrap her arms around her, burying her face in her shoulder.
