Chapter 87

++++++++++++

"Turn around,

Put your hand in mine,

Everything is changing,

I’m afraid of what I’ll find."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Carrie frowned as she woke to find fresh tear stains on the Texan's face. She leaned forward, kissing either of her eyelids carefully before tracing the path the tear stains made with her lips. She heard Kelly sigh softly, her breath tickling her face. She placed a light kiss at the corner of Kelly's mouth before pressing their cheeks together.
"You know I love you, right?" Carrie asked as she held onto Kelly tightly.
"Yea, I know," Kelly nodded, focusing on the feeling of Carrie's soft cheek against her own. Any form of skin-to-skin contact with the younger idol always brought about a sense of comfort.
"I just, I feel like we don't say that enough...I should've told Alex that more."
"She knew," Kelly replied. "She thought the world of you, you know?"
"She thought the world of everyone. Innocence is an amazing thing."
Kelly nodded in agreement, closing her eyes at the feeling of Carrie pulling away to be able to press her lips against her forehead.
"Remind me to tell Jason and Ashley tomorrow."
"You love them?" Kelly smiled softly, wiping away her own tears.
"It's kind of hard not to."
Kelly felt guilty as her heart swelled with happiness, knowing that now was definitely not the time for that.
"You surround yourself with some pretty amazing people," Carrie nodded. "As cheesy as it may sound, I really am honored to be counted as one of them."
"Well you are pretty amazing, so you fit right in."
Carrie kissed her forehead once more before pulling her closer.
Kelly rested her head in the crook of her neck.
"I'm sorry for falling apart like I did at the funeral," Carrie whispered, feeling Kelly's tears continuing to fall against her skin.
"Don't be. A lesser person would've been bawling on the ground."
Carrie sniffed back a laugh.
"And me holding onto you was the only thing keeping me from being a lesser person, bawling on the ground."
Carrie tightened her arms around her, their legs intertwining, "Where'd you go before the funeral?"
"I went for a walk around the church grounds to try and clear my head."
"Why didn't you want me to go?"
"Care, I didn't mean to hurt you," Kelly replied honestly, fingering the sleeve of the taller girl's t-shirt. "I just needed to be alone for a while."
"I would've been there for you, you know?"
"You're here for me now."
Carrie sighed.
"Care, I'm sorry, I am, but please understand that it had nothing to do with me not wanting to be with you, I just couldn't be around anybody."
"I know. I'm sorry for pushing it."
"No, it's fine," Kelly assured her. "I love that you're always honest with me, no matter what."
"I fly out this afternoon to do some promo," Carrie noted regretfully.
"I know," Kelly sniffed.
"You're gonna be ok?"
"Yea," she nodded, tightening her arms around her.
"Kell..."
"I promise."
"I don't have to go."
"Care, don't be ridiculous."
"I just know you've been going through a lot," she replied, running her nails up and down her back. "I would totally understand if you want me to stay."
"Carrie, go. That's an order; I'm serious. Besides, I'm gonna be in the studio for a while, finishing up my album. I won't really have time to hang out."
"If you need anything, you'll call me, right?"
"Yea."
Carrie gave a short laugh, "No you won't. You're too stubborn sometimes."
"You're too worrisome sometimes," Kelly countered.
"Some people call it caring."
Kelly felt her stomach turn nervously, her heart speeding up slightly, "Caring, huh?"
"That's what I hear," she felt Carrie shrug beneath her.
"Hm," Kelly chewed on her bottom lip as her fingers slid under the country singer's sleeve, lightly running over her upper arm, searching for more skin-to-skin contact.
"Is there a problem with that?" Carrie asked curiously, fighting back the giggle that was forming as Kelly's fingers unmeaningfully tickled her.
"Not at all," Kelly replied. "I mean...I care about you too."
Carrie smiled, "So you know what that means, don't you?"
"That because I care about you, I'll call you to keep you from worrying," Kelly nodded.
"Very good," Carrie replied, reaching up and placing her hand over Kelly's. She linked her fingers through the shorter girl's, covering the back of her hand. "I miss being close to you," she admitted softly but honestly.
"Me too," Kelly whispered. "But right now, my head's just...I can't."
"I know, I know," Carrie replied quickly, squeezing her hand. "Just honesty, that's all."
"I miss kissing you," Kelly confessed.
"We've kissed," Carrie pointed out.
"Yea, no, I mean..." she thought for a moment. "We've kissed out of sadness or hurt or comfort. I miss kissing you just for the sake of kissing you."
Carrie fought with herself before asking the next question, "Have we ever really kissed just for the sake of kissing? I mean, isn't it always just a precursor to something more?"
Kelly started to pull her hand away, but Carrie held onto it tightly.
"It's just honesty," she said gently.
"You say it like it's something easy."
"It should be."
"I want..." Kelly struggled. "I want to be able to kiss you just for the sake of kissing you. I don't want it to have to be a precursor to something more or anything else, and I want to enjoy it, and I don't want to have to worry about what it means that I enjoy it."
"Now that's some honesty right there," Carrie smiled softly.
"Too much?"
"It's never too much," she assured her.
