I do not own King Arthur or its characters. This is a piece of fiction to entertain only. I make no money off it.
The Rejection of a King
Her little cottage was not very big, but she had never needed it to be. Now she wondered where all the knights would sleep. It was very late, and her eyes felt gritty and heavy. Looking up from the book she had on the desk she rubbed at her eyes and unsuccessfully tried to stifle a yawn. Nearly all the knights were asleep curled up in cloaks on the floor. Guilt ripped at her. She should wake them, and make a few sleep in her bed, and one on the sofa. But that still left some without a soft spot to rest.
Movement from the corner of her eye got her attention, and she glanced at the recliner where Arthur sat reading. “Is that the same book?” she asked, frowning at how unused her voice sounded from hours of reading.
Blinking he lifted his head, peering about. “These legends of this King Arthur, quite fascinating really. Did you know they say that I will wed, and my wife will become Lancelot’s lover? It is what tears our love apart, and yet he will stand at my side when I die upon Badon Hill.” His green gaze bore into her. “Is that what you were trying so hard not to tell me last night?”
Rising slowly she came around her desk, and to him. He watched her, his dark brows knitting in a frown. “Is it?” he repeated.
“Do you believe Lancelot would betray you like that?” she parried, and hoped he considered it.
He did, his gaze falling to her midriff as he mulled it over for a moment. “No. He is a man who loves women, yes, but Lancelot guards his heart closely. I also would not like to believe I would so carelessly give mine to a woman who would betray me.”
She crouched at his knees, tilting her head to peer up at his face. “Legends are stories, and stories are told to entertain. Though there can be a grain of truth in legend, the story is embellished to make it sound more exciting to the ones who listen. You know Lancelot. You know if he would ever do something like that to you.”
Inhaling deeply he pushed forward so their faces were mere inches apart. “Tell me who this woman is I wed.”
His eyes were so green, and so intense. Meagan moistened her lips, finding that breathing was not so easily come by with him so near. “She was a daughter of a neighboring King, she was more beautiful than any other woman you had ever seen, and she fell in love with Lancelot because you sent him to fetch her when you could not go yourself.”
For a long moment he simply kept her gaze locked with his. “To lose her heart so quickly… What manner of woman is she? Do I lack so much that my bride could not love me always?”
“No. She was a fool.” A blush bloomed upon her cheeks, and she averted her gaze, staring down at the book in his lap. Rising suddenly she wiped her hands nervously on her hips. “Well, anyway…”
He had risen at the same time, and the action nearly knocked her back. Hurriedly he caught at her arms to steady her. “Forgive me, I…” His words ended on a hiss as her hands touched his chest, and moved upwards to his face.
“You feel so warm and real,” she whispered.
“Should I not?”
“I always thought dead men were cold to the touch,” she quipped.
“If I am dead then why does my heart pound? Why can I touch you, and feel you?” One hand lifted, and his fingertips touched her cheek. “If I am dead why do I feel the need to know the taste of your lips?”
Her breath caught, and her heart halted. The book he held fell to the floor when he used both hands to cup her face up. Startled she stepped back, and her gaze fell to the book. The page showing made her heart begin to pound all over again. A drawing of a woman could be seen, and beneath it the name Gwenhwyfar This was Arthur. He and Gwen were destined to be together, whether it was right or not. Remembering that fact made her back away a few more steps, her hands on his wrists to ease his hold upon her. “It’s not my lips you should want to taste.”
Arthur frowned, looking down at the book as she hurried out of the room. Bending he picked it up, and stared hard at the page on his ‘wife’. Was fate telling him that he could not escape what he was destined for? Snapping the book shut he peered at his sleeping men, and found one pair of light blue eyes locked upon him. Galahad’s gaze was full of hurt and anger, and the young knight stood and left without looking back at his commander.
