Part 9
Sam: I stood there, shocked at the sight that was in front of me. I don’t know what I was expecting when I decided to pull the curtain to Danny’s bunk back – but I certainly wasn’t expecting this. Ben and Danny were both breathing hard and looking even more shocked than what I was. “Wh-what the fuck?” I repeated. Ben rolled off of Danny and laid in the space next to him. “Ohhh, God.” Ben rubbed his face and then ran a hand through his hair. “Look, Sam. There’s no easy way to explain this so I’m just going to tell you straight. Me and Danny love each other, okay? Now, you and the guys can either accept that or not. So which one’s it gonna be?” I stared at Ben in amazement at how open he was being. My eyes flicked to Danny, who was looking at Ben with the same amount of amazement. I had a feeling that there was more to their relationship than just being best friends. But was I okay with them as a couple? Danny: Oh, fuck. This is where the problems start. First, our band mates – our closest friends – will freak out. Then, the girlfriends. And finally, the family. Sam’s face was hard to read. I wasn’t sure if he was shocked or disgusted. Probably both. His eyes were flicking from Ben to me, then back to Ben. His face broke out into a huge grin. “Jesus, Ben! Is that a real question? Of course I accept it! Fuck, you didn’t think that I’d be a complete arsehole about this, did you?” “We didn’t know what to expect, still don’t with Cam and James.” Ben looked relieved that Sam was so accepting - hell, I was. “They’ll be fine with it, too! Come on, guys, we’re your friends. We’re not gonna tell you that you can’t be together.” “Yeah, I guess you’re right,” Ben said, biting his lip rings nervously. “What did you want us – well, Danny – for anyway?” “Oh! Well, we’re all going to IHOP for breakfast and I came to get you guys up to see if you wanted to join us. What do you say?” Me and Ben looked at each other. I could tell by his expression that he was feeling the same as me. We weren’t quite ready to face Cam and James just yet. “I think we’ll have breakfast on the bus, thanks,” I answered for both of us. Sam would have usually pestered us to join them, but I think he understood our reasons, so he just nodded. “Okay. Too much for one morning, right?” He said, smiling at us again. “Yeah.” Sam was about to walk off into the bus’ lounge when I shouted him again. “Sam! Umm, don’t tell Cam and James about us. We’re going to tell them together.” Sam nodded and smiled reassuringly at me. “Don’t worry, I won’t.” He disappeared into the lounge and left me and Ben alone. We stayed silent for a while before Ben moved so that his arm was wrapped around my waist and his head was resting on my chest. I brought my hand up so that I could play with his hair. We both listened to the conversations coming from the front of the bus until we heard the door open and then close confirming the others’ departure. A comfortable silence filled the bus and me and Ben just laid there gathering our thoughts. “I love you, Danny,” Ben sighed. “I love you, too, Ben.” I placed my hand under his chin to push his face up towards mine and brought our lips together in a tender kiss. I couldn’t have had a better morning.
