Chapter 95

"And maybe I'm not up
For being a victim of love,
All my resistance
Will never be distance enough."

For some reason, Carrie wasn't surprised to see Kelly when she opened her front door, despite not having heard from the Texan in three days. She didn't say anything, just led the way up to her room where she was laying out outfits to choose from for the meeting that night...she refused to call it a date.
"Been busy?" she asked, sifting through her closet.
"Yea, you know, trying to get all the marketing side of the fourth album finished, and then in and out of the studio for the fifth one," Kelly replied, lying back on the bed, facing the ceiling. "You?"
"Yea, working on the video concepts for my next video, and doing a commercial for a sponsor."
"Cool."
"So...what made you decide to come?"
"I remembered you had trouble trying to decide what to wear for your last date with Michael...figured, you'd need help again."
"It's not a date."
Kelly rolled her eyes, mumbling under her breath.
Carrie sighed, crawling onto the bed, holding herself up over Kelly.
"Care..." she warned.
"What? What is so wrong with me being this close to you?" Carrie asked, moving the shorter girls' bangs out of her eyes.
Kelly shook her head, making them fall back to where they were.
"What is so wrong with me that every time I try and touch you, you shrink away?" Carrie asked, the hurt evident in her voice.
"There's nothing wrong with you," Kelly replied, sincerely. "You know that I think you're perfect."
"Then what's wrong?"
"There's just a lot going on right now."
"I'm so sorry about this Michael thing," Carrie pleaded, lowering herself down onto her elbows so that she was right over her. "You have to believe me when I say that I don't want to go out with him."
Kelly turned her face, just enough so that Carrie's lips weren't hovering over her own anymore.
"Kell..." Carrie's voice cracked.
"Please don't cry," Kelly begged, closing her eyes tightly as she tilted her head up to kiss the other girl's forehead. "I just need to clear my head from all of this...that's all."
"Promise?"
"I promise," she nodded, trying not to tense up too much as Carrie collapsed onto her, hugging her tightly.
"You'll be here when I get back like last time?"
Kelly felt her stomach churn at the reminder of where Carrie was going, "We'll see."

Kelly paced about the empty living room, her stomach in knots. There was no way she could stay there, and just sit and wonder what they were doing. She walked to the door, grabbing her keys, making sure to lock the door on her way out.

"I've found you find strength
In your moments of weakness."

"What's up?" Ashley asked as Kelly joined her in the kitchen of their Tennessee house.
"Nothing," she shrugged.
"You look bummed."
"Yea, well..."
"What's up shorty?" Ashley questioned, turning from the pan where she had been stir-frying some chicken.
"Nothing...I don't know."
"You've been moping about for a few days now. Anything you need that I can help you with?"
"Alcohol," Kelly nodded. "Lots of it, and the strongest we got."
Ashley frowned, "See, that response right there tells me the last thing you need to be doing right now is drinking."
"Yea...you're probably right," she sighed. "I'm gonna go lay down in my room for a bit. Tell me when the food's ready?"
"Sure thing," Ashley nodded.
Kelly walked out of the kitchen, making her way to her room, closing the door behind her. She stood for a moment, staring at her bed, coming face to face with Mr. Bear.

"Luke?" Kelly questioned, walking into his hospital room.
"You know, most people knock before entering a room."
"Yea, and most people aren't complete buttheads to their friends," she countered.
He frowned at her before going back to the dirt bike magazine he was looking at.
"Get up," Kelly said, walking to him and taking the magazine away.
"Excuse me?"
"I said get up, let's go."
"What for?"
"We're going on a trip," Kelly stood back, crossing her arms impatiently. "Come on."
"I don't know if you noticed, but I'm sick."
"Yea, you and everybody else in this hospital, so what?"
"You're crazy," he replied, reaching for his magazine.
Kelly batted his hand away, "Get out of bed. Let's go. I already spoke with your parents, now come on."
"I don't have to listen to you."
"See, this is what's wrong with the youth of today," she shook her head. "Y'all have no respect."
He rolled his eyes.
"Luke, I swear to God if you don't get out of bed right now, I'll carry you out myself."
"You seriously are crazy," he mumbled as he got out of the bed.
"Now get changed and put some shoes on. I'll be outside," Kelly ordered before exiting the room.
