Prologue

I remember it like it was yesterday. The day I learned my destiny. I had been at work all day, trying to earn some money for my overdue rent. Walking home from the restaurant where I had spend the day serving more or less obnoxious diners, I had only a warm shower and an uncomfortable bed to look forward to. One thing I was not in the mood for was the strange person following me on my way home. I could not see who it was, only that the person was a man of considerable height, who tried his best to go unnoticed. Something he failed miserably at. I had somehow felt his presence behind me ever since I left the restaurant. As I walked with hasty steps, down the rotten streets of my neighborhood, I held the pepper spray I had purchased only days before, firmly in my hand, making me feel just a little bit safer. I heard the footsteps behind me as I neared my house, my pulse started rising, as the sound grew louder and louder, and then all of a sudden…Nothing. The footsteps were gone. I stopped. I listened. There was nothing but the distant traffic and the gentle breeze blowing through the bushes on both sides of the road. I turned around to see if the person had only stopped or if he had indeed disappeared. Again there was nothing, I saw nothing. Shrugging I turned around again and continued my journey back to my house.
As soon as I stepped inside I locked the door, and headed for the bathroom to take a shower. I had just finished when there was a knock on the door. I could not help but wonder who would come by this late in the evening. However my curiosity got the better of me and I quickly wrapped a towel around me and ran to the front door. I looked through the peephole and saw that no one was there, so I figured that whoever it was, had probably decided that I was not at home and gone on their way. I turned around to head back to the bathroom, when I noticed an envelope lying on the floor. Surely this had not been there when I first came home. I picked it up and noticed my name on the front of it. I went in to the living room and sat down on the couch. I opened the envelope and found a letter inside of it.

Dear Angelique
I send you this letter, for reasons I cannot reveal to you this way. However, I will tell
you that I have been watching you for some time now and I have come to the conclusion that it is crucial that we meet. I have some information for you, which
are in your best interest to know. I suggest that we meet tomorrow night in
the park, by the playground, and there I will let you know what this is all about.
Please do not think this is some t to to lure an innocent girl into a madman’s web, I
can assure you that no harm will come to you. All I ask is that you do as told
in this letter, for what I have to tell you is of great importance to you and probably
to the rest of the world too.
I hope I will see you tomorrow night.

Sincerely, K.

K? Who was K? I was truly baffled by this letter. I feared that it was indeed some psychopath, maybe that guy who had followed me home, who had delivered this letter to my door. But then, the more I thought about, it was probably some of my friends, who had decided to play a trick on me. Okay. I would play along. I would go to the park the next night and I would see what tricks they had planned for me. Tomorrow was my 21st birthday, so my friends had probably planned a night of partying; only they wanted to play a joke on me first. Chuckling a little to myself I headed for bed, thinking of the fun I was going to have the next night.
