Lost Without You

mean any harm or disrespect to either Darren Hayes or Daniel Jones. The following is total fiction none of it really happened. (Well not that I’m aware of anyway!) I do not know Darren Hayes or Daniel Jones and I do not know their true sexuality. Though personally I think they would make a lovely couple!

“Ladies and gentlemen, Darren Hayes!”

And there he was in all his glory on stage right here in Oz, singing Lost Without You, a tribute to Delta Goodrem. It had been so long since I last saw him, so much had happened. For one thing I was engaged now. Kathy, a really sweet, beautiful girl. I loved her very much but despite her being there with me I couldn’t take my eyes off Darren. He looked so beautiful out there; I almost wished I was out there with him playing the piano for him like the old days. Almost, but I couldn’t do it, not in front of all those people.

He’d seen me watching from the side of the stage and he really emphasised certain lines of the song.  For my benefit? No, I didn’t think so, but when he emphasised the line ‘my bed’s so cold at night and I miss you more each day’ while looking directly at me, I had to wonder. Did he still have feelings for me? Did he want to rekindle what we once had? Or was he just teasing me? Trying to get a tiontion, see if I still had feelings for him. I tried not to react when he looked in my direction but it was so hard. You see I did still have feelings for him; they were as strong as ever, despite my love for Kathy. I thouI waI was over him but seeing him again brought all my feelings back to the surface.  I wondered if he knew what he was doing to me. I hoped Kathy didn’t. She knew we were close I didn’t want her to find out quite how close we were. I didn’t want to risk losing her only to find he was only playing with my emotions.

He left the stage moments later to rapturous applause, Delta was in tears! That’s the effect he could have on people. I was due on stage soon to announce one of the awards otherwise I think I would have made myself scarce before Darren came backstage, I wasn’t sure how things would be between us if we had to face each other. He came backstage and our eyes met, we looked at each other both unsure whether to speak or not. Eventually he decided to speak.

“Danny! Hi how are you doing?” he said with a smile.

I smiled back.  “Darren, I’m fine. You?”

“Yeah, I’m ok. It’s been a while. It’s nice to see you again.”

“You too. Are you staying long?”

“We were going to head back to the U.S. right after my performance. It’s Delta’s night.”

“We? You didn’t come alone then?”

“Sorry Dan, where are my manners. Let me introduce you to Cassy.”

He turned towards the girl I’d seen standing nearby while he was on stage.

“Cassy I’d like you to meet Daniel. Daniel, this is Cassy.”

So you’ve got a new girlfriend? I thought. Very pretty too!

Then he added, “My new P.A.”

Oh that’s ok then!

 I hope he’s not driving you too crazy with his demands.”

“Hello, Daniel. It’s nice to meet you at last. I’ve heard so much about you. It’s ok I keep him under control. He’s not too bad as bosses go.”

“Yeah, she doesn’t put up with any of my crap! She tells me off if I start having a tantrum. She’s like my mum!” He said with a laugh.

“You finally met your match hey? They do say these American girls are ballsier I guess it must be true!”

“Wells ces certainly is, aren’t you babe? It’s one of the things I like about her though, I love Leo but she did let me get away with more than was good for me!”

“Listen I’ve got to go onstage in a minute or so, do you fancy sticking around for a while?” I said to him hopefully. My heart leapt when he replied,

“Yeah, sure if you want me to? Maybe it’s time we had a proper talk, hey?

“Yeah, I’d like that.  I’ll see you after.”

“Ok mate.”

I went to find Kathy and we went onstage to present the award. I was a bit flustered after talking to Darren and that added to the nerves about being onstage made me mix up my words when I announced the winner.  ‘And the winner goes to..’ puhleese D you you idiot!  Delta was still overcome with emotion when she came onstage to accept her award, I don’t think she realises how talented she is or how much she deserves the awards she won that night.
