Prologue
A small scream made tiny five year old Jade look up and twitch his leather black wings. Being the intrepid little fellow that he was, Jade stopped playing and slowly went dge dge of the fence around the backyard. Just over the fence was the woods his daddy had told him never to go into.
Jade was just about to put it off to some kind of creature when the sound of someone crying made him perk up and look even harder. Almost out of sight in the woods a spot of bright white made him frown. There shouldn't be anything white in those woods. Taking a deep breath Jade beat his little wings just enough to help him get over the fence. Once outside of the safety he'd never left before, Jade started chewing on his bottom lip and before nodding to himself and taking off into the dark and kind of scary woods.
Once he was in the woods the crying seemed to be louder and Jade hurried faster. It sounded like someone was in pain. He didn't like it when people were hurt. He kept his eyes trained on the white so he didn't get lost and a few minutes later he came upon what was the strange color.
A tiny boy, no older than himself was sitting on the ground with one feathery white wing upright and perky looking, the other was laying limp, obviously broken even to a five year old.
"Hi." Jade said softly as he came closer.
The boy with the white wings gasped and tried to move away, but the broken wing hindered him.
"It's okay... I didn't mean to scare you. I'm Jade." Jade introduced himself as his daddy had taught him.
The small boy with his dark curls didn't say anything, instead he was looking over Jade's shoulder. Jade, wondering what could be so scary behind him, turned. He didn't see anything.
"I don't see nothing. Did you hit your head or something? One of my friends did that once and he talked funny for a while... But then the healers came and fixed him." Jade moved closer, unaware of the fear the other little boy was putting off. With out a thought Jade plopped down beside him and gave him a grin.
The other boy continued to stare at him half with fear and half with confusion. "you'renotgoingtoeatme, areyou?"
Jade looked at the other boy his tiny nose wrinkled in question. "I don't know what you said... Do you speak common?"
"Are you going to eat me?" the little boy asked with his dark curls hanging in his face.
"Why would I want to do that?" Jade gave him an even weirder look, wondering again if the other boy had hit his head.
"That's what my teacher told me your kind do. They eat White Wings." toy soy said as his eyes started to droop. He was so tired. He just wanted to go to sleep, but he knew he couldn't until his teacher or his friends found him.
"Why? I mean you're not a cow or a chicken... why would anyone want to eat another person?" Jade tilted his head and watched the other boy start to drift off. "Hey, you shouldn't go to sleep. That's what the healers told my friend when he hit his head."
The other little boy nodded and blinked his eyes wide open.
"I never saw white wings before." Jade said as he reached out for the okay wing and giggled as the feathers tickled his fingers. He jumped slightly when he felt a small chilly hand grasp one of his wings gently.
"They're so smooth." the other little boy giggled as he gently ran his hand over the soft leather of Jade's wing.
"You're are soft... I'd better get my daddy so he can get a healer for you." Jade said a moment later.
The other little boy's eyes went wide. "You can't do that!"
"Why not? You're hurt pretty bad." Jade pointed to the broken wing.
"But... I was told that Black Wings eat White Wings." the other little boy whispered, his dark chocolate eyes begging for Jade not to go.
Jade thought about it for a moment. "Well, I've been here for a while... I haven't tried to eat you... And my daddy's nice. He'll give you a piece of candy if you don't cry when the healer's done with you."
The other boy no slo slowly and Jade gave his undamaged a p a pat before running as fast as his little legs, with the help of his wings, could carry him.
Jade ran into his house and started yelling for his daddy.
A moment later the tall man with jet colored wings like Jade's came out of his office. "What's wrong, Jade? Are you hurt?"
"No! But I found a boy in the woods and he's hurt bad! His wing is laying funny. And he's acting like Kanali when he flew into that tree a couple of months ago. Come on Daddy! We've gotta help him!" Jade told his dad as he took the large man's hand and proceeded to try to drag him out of the house.
"Whoa, son. You were in the woods?" Jade's dad asked as he picked his son up and started out of the back door.
"I heard someone scream and then start cry... so I went to see what was going on... Then I found him. He's my size. But Daddy... he has white wings!" Jade told his dad as he settled himself on his dad's hip and pointed the direction.
"What color, Jade?" Jade's dad asked as he hurried through the woods, his wings drawn over Jade so the passing bramble couldn't hit him.
"White! They're so pretty, Daddy... And so soft! They're like a kitten only softer. There he is." Jade pointed out the small boy, who was sitting in pretty much the same place as when Jade had left him.
"Hey! My daddy's here now, he'll get you to a healer and get you fixed up real good." Jade said after his father had set him down.
The little boy's brown eyes were wide as he stared up at the tall Black Wing standing over him.
"It's okay, little one. I'll return you to your side of the forest." Jade's dad said as he knelt and held out a hand to the tiny White Wing.
Finally the little White Wing held out his arms and started crying, his firm five year old resolve breaking down at the prospect of comfort.
Jade's dad, not being able to say no to a wounded child gently lifted the boy into his arms and held him gently, careful of the broken wing. "It's okay... It'll be fine... Shush."
Jade watched his daddy comfort his new friend and stayed close when his daddy started back out of the woods.
Inside his house Jade watched as his daddy settled the boy on the couch and went to summon a healer. "Don't worry... This is where we live. You can stay here until Daddy can take you home or your mommy or daddy can come for you." Jade told him with an air of adult seriousness.
"Thank you... Jade." the other little boy gave him a little smile, which Jade returned.
"You never told me your name." Jade told him as he sat on the couch beside him.
"Davey... my name is Davey." Davey ducked his head in greeting.
"You look like a Davey... So how do those wings work? I mean you can't glide, can you? That's what I do." Jade asked as he reached out and touched the wing closest to him. By accident he brushed the wounded one causing Davey to cry out. "I'm so sorry... are you okay?" Jade's eyes were filled with tears as he put his hands over the wing and tried to take away the pain. He knew he was too little to do much, but maybe he could help a little.
A few minutes later, Jade's dad came in and found his son passed out on the floor and the other little boy laying on the couch asleep. Rushing to Jade's side he found that his son was just asleep as well. Laughing, he picked his son up and settled him on the couch careful of the little White Wing's broken wing.
But Jade's dad received a shock when he found that the wing was whole, as if it hadn't been broken in the first place. He smiled softly as he ruffled first his son's hair and then the White Wing's. Jade must have healed the other boy. Jade knew he was too little, but he'd always been a soft touch when it came to someone in pain.
Sighing, Jade's daddy turned and went to wait for the healer.
*****
Jade woke up with a yawn when a tiny hand was place in the middle of his chest and the hand pushed.
Opening one eye, Jade found that he was face to face with Davey, his new White Wing friend.
Giggling Jade reached out and brushed over the feathers laying near Davey's face. Jade frowned in wonder at the single black feather mostly hidden among the snowy white ones. But then he shook it off when he noticed his new friend was waking up.
The feeling of someone touching his wing made Davey wake up and smile at his friend. "Morning, Jade."
"Morning, Davey. Feeling better?" Jade asked as they both sat up. Jade noticed that they were in his bed, so his daddy must have moved them in there the night before.
Davey nodded looked around. "It's bright in here."
"Yeah... my other daddy made it for me before he went away." Jade said softly as he felt himself sadden by the mention of his other father.
"Sorry... I didn't mean to make you sad." Davey reached out and gave Jade a hug before they were broke apart by the sound of something like a fight in another room of the house.
The two young boys sat close together as the sound of yelling and fighting scared them. The sound of someone outside his door had Jade getting up, ready to protect his new friend.
The door was kicked open by a large White Wing. He stood glaring down at Jade before sighing in relief at the sight of Davey. "David."
"Teacher!" Davey literally flew off of the bed and landed in his teacher's arms.
"What happened, David?" the large White Wing asked as he held the small boy close to him.
"I was flying and something hit me... I fell... I landed just here behind the house... Jade found me and his daddy got me a healer who made me better." Davey told him animatedly as he bounced on his hip.
"Sounds like an adventure. Now we must go." Davey's teacher said as he turned to leave, only to have Davey stop him.
"Teacher, do you think Daddy would let Jade come over and play with me some time? If I promised to do my lessons real good and work on my horse back riding?" Davey bit his lip as he looked up at the large man carrying him.
"I don't think so, David. Your father doesn't want you associating with *their* ." ." the White Wing said as he looked down his nose at Jade, who stood there with a confused look on his face.
"Oh... Bye Jade." Davey said over the teacher's shoulder as they left the room.
"Bye, Davey." Jade waved to him and followed them as far as the living room. In the middle of the living room floor lay his father. Jade ran to his side and started crying when he couldn't get his daddy to wake up.
"Teacher! There's something wrong with Jade's daddy! We've gotta help!" Davey said as he saw the tall man who had helped him laying so still in the floor.
"There's nothing to be done, David. All of his kind have to die, one now or later doesn't matter." the White Wing said as he walked out of the door and took to the air with twenty guards around them. Davey cried and fought him, trying to get back to his friend.
Jade, using all of his strength turned his daddy over and cried even more as he saw that his daddy wasn't awake. And the glow that he could see around everything living was gone. His daddy was dead. Those stupid White Wings had killed his daddy. He'd make them pay... he would, one day.
He never knew how long he sat there, only that the sun rose and fell a time or two when the soundsomesomeone walking up behind him made the tiny Black Wing stand and start fighting who ever it was.
Gentle hands held his and Jade was forced to blink the tears out of his eyes as he looked up at the man who held his hands. His black wings were so dark they had a blue tone to them and Jade snuffled a little as he studied the man who held him.
"Don't worry, Jade... You're okay now... Everything will be fine. No one will hurt you, I swear." the man stood and picked Jade up, who clung still crying even though he had been for days already.
The man turned and walked to the door where another man stood, his wings lowered in mourning for the dead man on the floor. "Burn the body... Commit my beloved's ashes to the skies... Let it be known that my consort has been killed by a White Wing... and this means war."
"Yes, my King." the man bowed and waved his men forward to gather up the body of the royal consort before carrying it away.
"Who are you and where are they taking my daddy?" Jade demanded as he tried to get down, but he was too weak from crying and not eating or sleeping for a long time.
"I am you other father... And your daddy has been lifted up on the Great Southern Winds {1}." the King said as he carried his son and heir out of the house and away from the only life Jade had only knew.
