His bright eyes shine down into mine, my body tight against him. He always kisses the top of my head; holding me close. Always afraid to let go. I tell him I love him. He tells me to be quiet. I tell him I want to be with him forever. He tells me it's too long. I tell him it's not. We'll last. We won't, he argues. We survived through your marriage, right? He shakes his head. Just barely, he whispers. You won't lose me, I reassure him. He doesn't believe me. He's afraid of competition, affections waning. Time. Always time. He knows we're getting old. He wants it to stop. We both want this moment forever.

I get up off the ground, the winter sky crying snowflakes onto my black jacket. The flowers I put here every Sunday are covered in frost, glittering in the light. The fresh blood red roses look wrong against the monochromatic grave, the other flowers colourless. The whole place devoid of colour. My cell vibrates and I take it out. I recognise the number flashing and I reject the call. He said forever. I didn't believe it. He made me see it could happen. It didn't. The tears are falling down my face, burning tracks against the cold of my skin. I look down once more at the grave, say my goodbyes and leave my daughter to rest in peace

Paul watches Richard walk away from his daughter's grave in silence. A hand on his shoulder brings him back to reality. "Ready to leave?" He nods at Christoph, who leans in, kissing him under the dark winter sky, the snow falling on their faces. Two figures entwined, promises of love, kisses and snowflakes keeping them forever young and happy. They leave, not looking back at the broken man they left behind
