Snow beat down on her windshield as Luca smiled to herself, humming along to her crappy car stereo. A familiar highway sign appeared in her view on the right. She squinted through the blinding snow. Only a half hour to home! she thought, excitedly. It was a boring 8 hour drive to the bustling metropolis that her parents lived in, a long ways from the smaller city that she called home. She liked it though, the solitude of driving with only the music to keep her company. She happily sang even louder as she saw the city lights approach. The thought of all the Christmas lights and warm fire she'd see when she arrived had made her trip more bearable. She probably should have left a little earlier, but the last night's events hadn't afforded her an early curfew. She smiled again at that thought. Yes, she'd had a good time last night. Her smile broadened at the memory of that guy trying to pick her up last night. ...what was his name.. ..oh well, she sighed. She'd worry about that when she got home.
She hadn't even pulled into the driveway when her mother's two toy poodles came running out on the front lawn, leaping like wild cats through the calf-deep snow. "Max! Tinker!" she cooed, scooping them up. The dogs gleefully licked her face, too excited to be contained in her arms, and jumped back down to the ground. Her mom came out, smile and little brother in tow. They exchanged greetings, hugging each other in turn and brought her bags into the house.
She noticed that the Christmas decorations were all up, (her father was a Christmas nut!) and she was happy to see a nice fire glowing in the fireplace. She dragged her things to her room, kept, as always, just the way she'd left it, and set them down on the bed. She opened up her suitcase, and pulled out some shampoo, face wash, a towel, and her toothbrush. Driving for so long always made her face a greasy mess, not to mention anything about her now flat, ear-length platinum blond hair that was pulled back in a headband. She needed a shower and some food.
"Mom, I'm having a shower!" she yelled, walking towards the bathroom.
"Okay," her mom replied.
She had just twisted the knob on the door to the bathroom when her mom called out, "Luca, I forgot, Marina called for you about an hour ago, she wanted you to call her when you got here."
"Okay, thanks mom, I'll call her when I finish my shower." she trailed off as she walked into the bathroom and closed the door.
