People on GSB requested more of 'Five Years' so I wrote a prequel...
Five Years Before
"Look, I can't stay anymore." he said. "I'm not meant to be here." His voice was that of explanation. "There's too much shit here and there's no room for someone like me. I don't fit here. I don't fit with my family . . . or at school or at work or even at the clubs anymore."
"B-But don't you fit with me?" I know it sounded pathetic, but I didn't care. I loved him. I couldn't let him leave me.
"I don't know." he said, shaking his head and throwing more things into his duffel bag. "I just don't know anymore."
"But . . . you said you loved me."
"I do love you." He stared at me. "Love has nothing to do with this. This has to do with fitting and the longer I'm here the more I realize I don't fit anywhere. I'm sorry."
"But you fit with me!" I all but screamed. "You fit with me, Billie Joe! Dammit."
I sat down and put my head in my hands, trying not to cry. He dropped the jeans he was holding and sat down next to me, putting his arms around me. "I don't fit anywhere, Mike. Not now."
"You said you'd never leave me."
"I'll come back, baby, I promise."
"It's still leaving."
He sighed and nodded, sadly. "I know. I'm sorry."
He left me that day, hopping in the seat of some guy's car. I'll never forget it.
