A/N: While I was waiting for inspiration on another fic, this suddenly came to mind. So I wrote it out and here it is. So that people don't wonder, the girl was impregnated by her boyfriend who left her, and her parents died a few years ago so Gerard is NOT the father in any way shape or form.

*********************************

She was dead. There was no getting around it, the girl was dead. Gerard had been around enough to recognize a corpse when he saw one. The hospital bed was soaked in blood, and they'd taken the baby away. 'Jesus, she was a baby herself.' He thought as he stepped closer. She was maybe 14, 15 tops, her blond hair plastered to her forehead from sweat and exertion. Her blue eyes were closed, her face slack, the way a dead person should look.

Gerard sighed and pulled up a seat, staring at her. How was he supposed to feel about this? He didn't know this girl, only that she'd needed a ride to the hospital. She'd stumbled over to him at the coffee shop, begging him. "Please mister, I think I'm gonna have my baby, could you please take me to the hospital?" He wanted to call an ambulance but when her water broke, he knew there wasn't enough time. So he'd taken this skinny little thing, this tiny girl he didn't know, and sped to the hospital like the proverbial bat out of hell.

And when he'd seen the swell of her belly as they put her on the gurney, it looked all the more perverse with her tiny body. She hadn't even grown breasts yet, and it wasn't going to happen now. They'd dragged him to the delivery room, thinking him the father. He'd tried to explain but there hadn't been time, they'd simply forced him into a set of scrubs and pulled him into the room. Gerard, not knowing what to do, took her hand and let her squeeze it as she screamed from the pain.

He saw that there were still trails of the tears she'd shed as she struggled to give birth. She'd cried so much... Gerard had kissed her forehead and told her to remain strong. He then screamed at the doctor, "Isn't there something you could give her for fuck's sake?! She's suffering over here!" The doctor gave him a grave look, then said, "Her chart shows she's allergic to opiates, there's nothing we can do for her." Gerard looked at him, shocked. There was something he wasn't saying... Then he remembered.

When they'd first come in, a nurse had given her a shot, something "to help with those contractions." The singer's eyes widened in horror as he realized the girl was going to die, because someone had fucked up. They'd killed this girl, and what was worse, she knew it. She grabbed the lapel of Gerard's jacket through the gauzy scrubs, pulling him close. "Name the baby... After my daddy Nicolas if it's a boy... Agatha for my mama if it's a girl, please!" She'd begged.

He'd assured her he would, and told her to concentrate, to push, to breathe... And when the baby came, the most dazzling smile graced her lips. She looked like an angel as the doctor declared, "It's a boy!" She gave a weak laugh, but her smile faltered, her eyelids drooped a bit. Gerard clasped her hand tighter, saying, "C'mon sugar, hang in there." Her breathing got heavy and the doctors who'd been so eager to pull him into the room were now forcing him out.

An hour later they found him in the waiting room. He couldn't leave her, not that little girl... They told him she'd died, an accidental death from the Demerol and the stress of the birthing. "You can... Go say good bye." The doctor said gently, clapping Gerard on the shoulder. He feebly tried to protest, saying he wasn't the father, trying to explain he hadn't known her, but he was back in that room.

"They could have at least cleaned you up." He muttered as he took her hand, saying, "And I'll make sure they name him Nicolas, I promise." He suddenly choked up, the thought of a life cut short to bring another into this world... Gerard was sure he would cry. He sat with her, he didn't know for how long, holding her clammy hand. A nurse came in, saying they were sorry but she had no family to speak of. "So will you be taking the baby?" She asked.

Gerard looked up, wanting to scream at the woman. But when he saw it wasn't the same nurse, he simply sighed. He thought about it... Then he asked, "What was her name?" The nurse seemed startled, but read it off the chart. "Charlotte Mae Daniels." Gerard nodded and let go of her hand, standing. "Okay, I'll adopt the kid... But if they won't let me you make sure he's named Nicolas Daniels, okay?"

The nurse nodded and swept out of the room. Gerard took one last look at Charlotte, then left. He went outside to have a cigarette and to think. He'd take care of that baby, the kid had no one else. He was going to be a father. The notion should have scared the hell out of him, but he felt he owed it to that little girl. Not out of pity or some misguided sense of loyalty either.

She'd shown him something tonight that made him realize how precious life really was, and how fragile at the same time. But it was still precious, and she'd shown him that. If it hadn't been for her... "I'd probably be dead right now." He muttered aloud, finishing the thought. It was true, despite all his fame and success, he'd never really gotten over his depression. He'd been intending on doing it tonight, ending his own existence. But now that seemed cowardly to him. After what she'd gone through.

The nurse from earlier came to find Gerard, saying that the baby would be released into his custody the next day. "Then I better go home and get ready." He said, smiling as he dropped his cigarette on the ground and crushed it out. It would be his last. As he went to his car he vaguely wondered how he was going to explain to his friends or his girlfriend how he ended up with a baby, but at that point it didn't matter. He drove off, silently praying as he did so that he could give the baby a better life.
