Dragged Below

"Dragged Below”

Sleep's shredded net caught him in the face,
smashed him against rocks and rusted ships.
Whelmed by mal de mer, swaying, he saw something,
but his vision was wet sand rushing to sea,
pouring through his eye sockets. He grasped for something--
Anything

He woke surly and pushed a cigarette against his teeth,
the fucking bed still empty
He'd ripped the sheets from its corners, twisting
Better pissed than slashed wrists, he'd like to say
He kicked them off the mattress and took another drag
The back of his head against the wall.
Awake, eyes closed, he was still drowning.
He sucked in another lungful of death
and held the phone to his ear.
