Chapter One
Long Ago (Prologue)
He thought she was the prettiest girl in the world from the moment he met her when her family moved in on his street. They were seven, and had just completed second grade at two very different schools in two different cities. They became fast friends, hwoever, would often beg their parents to go over one another's houses just to sit in Gerard's backyard and talk while they dangled their feet off the of the swings.
By high school, their feet no longer dangled, and so they would keep their feet on the ground and bend their legs in and out a little while they sat there, laughing and joking about all their horrible teachers and terrible classes. He didn't understand why they bothered her, quite honestly, she always got excellent grades. His weren't as good, but he was by no means a stupid kid.
They both got in to the local college, and after graduating, they spent the summer having as much fun as possible before, as she always put it, "another four crappy years of another crappy, public school". Stepping onto campus that first day, however, they both fell in love with all the places to go and putz around between and even during classes. College was much easier for Gerard, because he got to take some really fun music courses, and he and Helena arranged their schedules so they took everything in the morning/early afternoon and then spent the rest of the day together.
Both worked hard towards their degrees. A lot of the time he felt like he put the most work into it, she would often tell him she only went to hang out with him and so she didn't have a lower paying job than him. She went into a social work field of courses after a year's undeclared major, and quickly grew to love the classes, as well as score higher than Gerard yet again. He didn't mind, by this point whenever she was happy, he was happy to see her happy.
Senior year came in 2005, and yearbooks had just been distributed before the last week of classes. Gerard, however, forgot his that day in his dorm, and when he met Helena out in the trees like he always did at lunch time, she raised an eyebrow at him and brushed dark hair away to reveal a sparkling blue eye. "Well I must say Gerard Way, I'm glad you want to have something to remember me by."
He rolled his eyes playfully and sat next to her. "Firstly, you rhymed. Secondly, you're gonna see me every day until the day we die, we'll be busy that day but after that we'll go haunt everyone we ever hated." He said with a thoughtful nod. They weren't the popular kids in school, despite having a few friends.
Helena handed him her yearbook with a playful roll of the eyes. "Well sign mine then, I'll sign yours later. I wanna look back at it when we're all old, and think, 'Why was that boy so STRANGE?'" She laughed a little, shaking her head as she watched him begin to write. He was strange, yes, but as he sat there and silently battled feelings for her, he had no idea she was battling similar feelings.
They might never have known after that ball had rolled over by her bag. She moved out of the way so it's owner could grab it and her eyes locked on Jack, the most popular, gorgeous guy in school. EVERY girl had to like themself some of that, and she blushed a little and looked away. "Sorry bout that."
Jack was frozen where he stood, a little smile tugging at his lips as he glanced down at Helena. "Oh no, it's ok, it was my fault." She looed up at him, surprised and he knew she had to be. Popular guys didn't take the blame from unpopular girls, no matter whose fault it was. "Helena, right?"
Gerard had just been finishing his message and working up the nerve to tell her fianlly, a white rose tucked behind his back when Jack came over and they began to chat in friendly voices, he looked at her, then Jack, then ran his fingers up the stem of the rose to lightly touch the petals, then he looked at what he had written.
I'm trying to let you know how much you mean to me. . .
He sighed hopelessly and shut the book, laid it quietly down and placed the rose on top of it, stood with his few books and went back to his dorm to study for his last final, hoping her reading the message would bring her back to him with the rose rather quickly, but he was finding himself quickly without hope.
"Um," Jack rubbed the back of his head nervously, flashing a charming smile at Helena. "So I know this may be strange, but, d'you wanna go out some time? You seem really cool and you're really pretty and smart and I'd love to hear your theories over. . dinner?"
Helena thought she was dreaming, and her heavily lined eyes drooped for a moment, then quickly picked up as she smiled at Jack. "I'd uh, I'd love that, Jack." She said, her hands clasping in frotn of herself shyly.
"There's this great Chinese place down the block, and they're having a lo mein special tonight. Can I come get you at around, maybe eight?" He asked, shoving his hands into his jean pockets, his head tilting curiously as he waited for an answer from her, not a spike of blonde hair on top moving the slightest bit.
"Eight 'o' clock." She whispered dreamily, smiling at him some more. He winked at her and walked back to play with his buddies, and she turned quickly with a squeal. "Gerard, did you see who just. . .?" She paused when she noticed her best friend was gone, and she bent and picked the rose up, smelled it. "Hmmm, wonder where he found this." She said, scooping the yearbook up before prancing inside to try on outfits.
She never did look at it.
-------------------------------
Gerard sighed when she hadn't come to see him by ten thirty. He knew he shouldn't have expected her, but he couldn't help feeling like she should have at least come to say she only wanted to be friends. That was just what she would have done. He called her room and her room mate said she was out, so he decided to go wait for her by her window, like he always did.
He was both stunned and horrified, however, to see her arrive with none other than Jack, and he thought his heart was breaking when she leant over and kissed Jack's cheek. He ducked back into the shrubbery and waited for Jack to leave in his fancy car before he moved out, a little tear sreaming down his face, taking some of the makeup with it. This was it, the moment he decided to never pursue her, the moment he saw how happy she was with a normal guy.
