The year was 1984. I was eight years old when my family uprooted me from my home in Japan and moved me to Finland.
My father was Finnish and my mother was Japanese. My dad had moved back home for work, he was a doctor but could only practice in Finland. My mom was a artist, she did beautiful oil paintings of anything that she saw beauty in. She could turn the ugliest thing into a work of art.
We moved into a small commuty outside of Helsinki. There were plenty of other kids my age but I wasn't interested in them. I was a lonely only child and liked it that way. I loved being alone most of the time. I liked to read and write and draw. Pretty much all I did was read in my room.
A few weeks after we moved in my mother thought it was time I made some friends so she locked me outside. I never left the yard.
It was the first day of school that I met Ville Valo. A name that one day millions would know, yet few would truly remember. I remember my first impression of him. I thought he was cute. In other words, he was my first crush.
I sat in the back like he did and was quiet and well behaved. Ville on the other was a horrible trouble maker. He would fight with the other kids contently because of his long hair and strange clothes. I remember his hair was still light blonde than and so curly it stuck out like a yellow bush. Surprisingly he was always a bit pudgy than. It didn't matter to me. He was mystiques and had such pretty green eyes. I remember when I found that he lived right next door to me, I was overjoyed because than I could spy on him while he practiced his bass guitar in his room.
I don't think he ever paid notice to me. But the other boys in my class sure did. I was exotic looking, with my long black silky hair and dark blue almond shaped eyes. I was half Japanese after all, and it showed in my blood. My skin was a pale olive tone that easily tanned a softly or held a ghostly pallor. My face was classic heart shaped and my lips were full and pouty. I looked like a prefect china doll and my mother often dressed me the part. In lacy white dresses and classic kumos. I hated them. I wanted to dress in darker colors like Ville and see if he noticed me than.
It was half way though the year before the first time me and Ville actually spoke to one another. My mother started to talk to Anita, Ville's mother and so she'd go over there often on long afternoons when papa was gone into the city. The first time I was bored out of my mind because Ville locked himself in his room and I had to listen to our mothers talk about things I had little understanding of. So the next time Anita made sure that Ville was there to keep me entertained.
That morning I was so excited! I dressed in my favorite black tee-shirt that had red butterflies on the front and wore my best blue jeans and asked my Mama to pull my hair into two high pony tales with red ribbons. People always told me how cute I looked in pig tales.
Ville was drawing at there dinning room table when got there. He looked up at me for a moment and I gave him my best smile. He blinked and went back to drawing. I was crushed but I wouldn't give up. My smile had gotten me ten euros from my grandparents before and it got me extra snacks from my classmates when ever I wanted them. Why did he seem immune?
"Well, I guess we can leave them to it than. Ville?" Mrs. Valo asked, Ville looked up at his mother.
"Be a good boy and show Rose-Lee your Bass ok? Her Mamma says she's very excited to learn herself. We're going to be in the living room talking, try not to interrupt alright dear?" Ville nodded and Mrs. Valo patted him on the head before wobbling out of the room. Mrs. Valo was six months pregnant and looked like she'd swallowed a basketball. My Mama touched my shoulder before turning out of the room herself.
"Play nice," She called, fallowing Mrs. Valo out of the room. The butterflies started in and I became slightly nervous.
"Come on," Ville said, rolling his eyes and hopping down from his chair. I smiled happily and fallowed him upstairs to his room. I jumped when coming face to face with a zombie poster on his door. Ville laughed and opened the door shaking his head.
"Girls," he mumbled under his breath. His room was clean. Cleaner than mine. It was covered in posters of bands I'd never heard of. Most of them quiet scary looking. I found them fasitanting. He walked over to the corner of his room where a wooden bass guitar stood against the wall next to a small amp. He picked it up and sit on the edge of his bed and turned on his amp.
"Can you play any songs?" I asked, sitting next to him. He gave me a funny look.
"Of course I can play songs! What do you think I do with this thing? Stare at it?"
I shrugged and felt my cheeks heat up in a blush. He sighed rolled his eyes again, before he started to pluck the strings and the amp roared to life. I sat there on his bed and watched him play for hours. So glad I could finally hear the sounds he was making. After a little while he stopped and frowned.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" I blushed harder.
"I don't know what you mean." I started to play with my pony tale. He narrowed his eyes at me and started playing again. Than my Mama called me down stairs and said it was time to go. I was sad to leave but she promised we'd come back soon and I could watch Ville play more. I wasn't sure if he was happy about that but I was determined to make him like me.
The next day at school I went up to him and asked if he wanted to play tag with me and I was so happy when he said yes! I didn't play hard to catch so when it was my turn Ville knew I was up to something and ran very fast. I fallowed him though the trees and right back inside to where he tried to hid behind a desk but I jumped on him and wrestled him to the ground. Once I had him pinned I kissed him right on the lips! He was so mad! Kicking and trying to break free but I was stronger and I kissed him again and again and again! He was no match for me.
I was floating on clouds the rest of the day, while he scowled at me and I smiled back. Blowing him kisses teasingly.
He told me that day that he hated me. But I knew that deep down that was the day that he started to love me.
