The Secret

Ellie McDonald was proud of all of her children.

Her eldest, Samantha, was the spitting image of her Dad, with deep violet eyes, white blonde hair and a serious, studious personality. She passed all of her exams with flying colours and was currently at University. Samantha's Dad, Pete, had been so proud and went round telling everyone 'My Sam's going to Oxford, you know' and would puff out his chest, as if he had something to do with her success other than genetics.

Her youngest Ben was like her around the eyes and had her colouring, reddish curly hair with fair, freckled skin. He was sensitive, thoughtful and loved sport. He was going through puberty and his skin was breaking out a little. His mood swings were becoming legendary and a dent in the dining room door was the latest souvenir of his tendency to throw things.

Her middle son, Kyle, was different from the rest of the family. Ellie used to laugh and tell him he looked like the milkman. He had his Mother's mouth but almond-shaped eyes and a long nose. Pete would pull out the family photos and tell Kyle he looked just like his Great Granddad. 'Look...you have his nose, that's for sure, son!' Kyle enjoyed school but didn't excel at anything in particular until he went to college. Taking Media Studies had been a whim but he found his niche and was loving it.

Ellie stepped out of the shower and looked at herself in the mirror. Her breasts were fuller than they had been in her younger years but the skin was still smooth and peachy, not too many stretch marks. Her stomach was more rounded, too.

She ran her fingers through her red hair. She had kept it long since childhood; its natural curl gave her an almost pre-Raphaelite look that attracted plenty of male attention, most of it she ignored, because she already had Pete.

Ellie and Pete had met at a school disco. She was in awe of him, being older by three years and very good-looking, his blonde hair almost shoulder-length and slicked back with gel, his lean frame and blue eyes, she thought he looked like Martin Fry from ABC and she fell for him hook line and sinker. She was 15 then and by the age of 19 they were married and she was pregnant with Sam.

Which was when things started going wrong.

*************************************************************

Ellie pulled on her jeans and a blue T Shirt and ran down the stairs to grab the 'phone, which was ringing off the hook.

'Hey there, you mad woman! A voice screeched down the phone at her.

'Hey there, you daft cow!' She laughed.

Poppy was Ellie's oldest friend and lived in London. Ellie had put off seeing her for too long and they had arranged a week's break, starting the following weekend.

'I can't believe it's only a week away! I've missed you! It's going to be crazy so hold onto your undies!' Poppy laughed down the phone at Ellie, who smiled indulgently.

'I'm looking forward to it, Poppy, it's been too long!'

The last time they had seen each other it wasn't a happy visit. Pete had just moved out and Poppy was indignant, furious on Ellie's behalf and bad-mouthed him, when the kids were out of earshot, the whole time she was there. But Poppy didn't know the full story. Only Ellie knew and she wasn't planning on telling anyone if she could help it.

'So tell me? How's the Theatre?' Ellie was fascinated by Poppy's world. Being a dresser at the Haymarket suited her down to the ground. She was single, vivacious, loud and had a ball of energy. Not bad for 45, as she told anyone who would listen.

'It's busy busy, we've a couple of big do's coming up. In fact I have tickets for one of them for when you come, it will be fun, free wine plus you can do some star spotting while you're there!'

Poppy laughed, she knew how exciting Ellie found it. To Poppy, it was just work with a few jolly social events thrown in.

'A great way to celebrate my birthday, then!' Ellie laughed.

'Oh, yeah... that’s right! What's it like honey, being 40?' Poppy put on a dull, monotone voice. Ellie laughed. There was no way anyone could feel old around Poppy.

'Well, my tits haven't started banging on my knee's yet, so I think I'm OK!'

'Good girl! And the love life?' Poppy needed details, always.

'Nothing happening, although I'm open to offers if you know any rich blokes who want a used just-turned-40 single mum of three?'

Ellie had become accustomed to her own company in the last three years but she did miss the sex. There was only so much masturbation could do, it was no substitute for feeling a man's arms around you.

'I'll put the word out!' Poppy smiled. 'See you next week, sweetie.'

'Yep, see you then.' Ellie grinned to herself as she walked into the kitchen to make an herbal tea. She looked at the packet. It was meant to be stimulating and refreshing. She changed her mind and went for coffee instead. She would cut down on the caffeine another day.
