Chapter 1 – A New Beginning
The huge house seemed even bigger now, her mom and dad had passed away some time ago, and this morning she’d watched tearfully as her younger twin brothers packed and left for college. With the death of her parents the boys had been her companions, her valiant protectors, and her lifeline. Now she was, for the first time, alone in this place she called home. She stood in front of the picture window in the family room and marveled at the amazing sunset. There was just the slightest hint of clouds and the sky had taken on an unbelievable purple and orange hue.
“God sure knows how to end a day” she found herself saying aloud. Turning back into the room she looked around slowly, taking it all in, and trying to hold back the tears. “We had a lot of good times in this house,” she said aloud.
The thought seemed to envelope her, and as she adjusted a picture of the twins on the mantle the tears found their way to her cheeks. Her mind drifted to days filled with laughter, and the seemingly unending fights of siblings, to Christmases and Halloween parties, fights for the drumstick on Thanksgiving and battles for the remote control.
“Yes,” she thought “good times.” The intrusive ringing of the phone interrupted her peaceful reverie.
“Hello?”
“Hey, it’s me.”
She recognized the voice instantly, the deep gravely tone was impossible to mistake.
“I’m just about to board my flight, how are you holding up?”
“I’m fine” she said, the white lie was barely past her lips when he responded
“Tell that to someone who doesn’t know you, did the boys get to the airport on time?”
Her half-hearted response came slowly, “Yeah, they should be somewhere over Texas by now.”
“Try not to worry baby, I’ll be there in a couple of hours. Tell you what, I’ll make you dinner, and we’ll have a nice quiet evening together, okay”?
A hint of mischief colored his voice as he said, “You can help me forget about work and I promise I’ll do my best to take your mind off your brothers.”
She couldn’t help but smile at the thought of forgetting her worries in Vin’s arms.
“Okay baby? I’ll see you soon, I gotta go, they’re calling my flight.” With that she listened to him say “bye sweet-cheeks,” and she hung up the phone.
