A light breeze from somewhere in the room buffeted the small candle’s flame, probably someone leaving the chapel, and for a second it grew to twice its size before it righted itself. He stared into the now steady white-gold flame, to the center where a sliver of bright blue tried to reach into the more mundane orange. It wasn’t the blue of Jimmy’s eyes, his eyes were brighter. His throat closed again and a warm tear tracked down his raw cheeks before dropping to the floor. He didn’t know how his body kept squeezing tears out, his eyes had been red for almost three days and they still kept coming. A cold chill radiated through him, the fourth one for the day. He shivered and wrapped his arms around his torso still staring into the fire. The blue had disappeared and was replaced with a dark center.
“Brian.” Matt’s soft voice was followed by a warm arm wrapping around his shoulders and pulling him close. Brian canted his head enough to press his wet cheek against the singer’s neck and Matt’s other hand came to a rest on his hip while he continued to stare at the flame. Matt didn’t say anything else and they stood together staring at the rows of candles set up on the altar. With Matt pressed close to his back and with his heavy suit jacket he was starting to feel too warm, which seemed ridiculous since he could still feel tremors running through him every few seconds.
Even when he finally looked away from the bright candles to Johnny who came up beside him, they still burned in his eyes. Johnny leaned against him and he hooked his arms under the bassist’s shoulders and hugged him against his chest like the giant teddy bear he was. The smaller man didn’t look at the candles and instead closed his eyes and let his head rest on Brian’s shoulder. Matt made a small sound and his arm tightened for a second before he relaxed again. The hand on his hip disappeared and was replaced by Zack. Another shudder went through him, this one worse than the others, because with the others here he could feel the hole in them; the body that should have been on his other side.
He bit his bottom lip so the tears would come quietly. Johnny’s breathing stuttered against neck and he hugged him tighter. He leaned his head down and rested his chin on Johnny’s temple jarring a few more tears loose. They caught the candlelight and for a brief second they glowed white-gold like a pair of flames before disappearing into the dark carpet.
