Never Far

Brian stood knee deep in the cool salty water as waves knocked against him. The day was overcast, a rare thing for Orange County, California but he was looking forward to the storm the massive billowing black clouds promised. He closed his eyes and tipped his head back filling his lungs with the briny ocean scent and the sweeter smell of impending rain.

A soggy nerfball socked him in the back. From the beach Matt’s raspy chortle lifted over the waves and he shook his head. With a flick of his wrist the next wave reared up over his head and chilled glassy water surrounded and passed him and a second later Matt’s laugh became a surprised yelp as the wave crashed on the shore. The first of the raindrops pierced the agitated water and the sand under his feet began to shift. He laughed and let the next wave carry him back to shore, “Forget it, you’re not getting me again.” The water where he’d been a second before collapsed into a whirlpool as the sandy bottom dropped out.

“It’s cold, can we go home now?” Zack asked. He was further away from the water, huddled inside a hoody trying to hide from the cold rain that was falling harder. Johnny ran past and the wind kicked up pelting everyone with sand, “Come on Zacky, don’t be such a grouch.” On the next receding wave Brian carved a rough symbol into the sand and the next wave to hit the beach shot up in a frothy geyser and soaked Johnny. The bassist cursed and hugged his torso, “Okay, it’s cold. Let’s go home.” He said through chattering teeth. Zack popped up and darted for the car with Johnny following closely. “Jimmy, we’re going home.” Matt yelled. From the froth of an incoming wave a familiar lanky from stepped out. “The storm is going to be epic.” He smiled.

Back home some of the water’s buoyancy waned as Matt rolled the floor rug back to reveal the much chalked over pentacle in the middle of the floor. Jimmy drifted over and stood in the middle and the purple star and circle began to glow a faint blue. Ancient runes marked the four corners and while Brian took his place at the western water rune, Johnny stood opposite of him at the eastern air rune and Zack stood at fiery south while Matt took his place at the earthen north. Jimmy smiled at Brian, “It’s not forever, you know. You can call me back in three days if you want.”

Brian smiled back, “I know, but I still miss you.” He said softly. Jimmy’s blue eyes glowed as brightly as the pentacle under him, “You can talk to me whenever Brian.” He reminded him. Zack’s calloused fingers brushed his and he reached out to his and Matt’s outstretched hands. The runes and pentacle flared white and Brian closed his eyes letting the magic buffet him like a pleasant spring breeze as Johnny released his hold on the eastern anchor holding Jimmy’s spirit in their world. Next, Zack’s warm energy swelled and dissipated like a flame blowing out and then it was his turn. His anchoring magic lifted like a surfer on a swell. The room hummed with energy and with a soft sigh everything quieted when Matt released his power like sand shifting beneath their feet.

“I’ll talk to you tonight.” Brian murmured.

A/N: Hmm…I think it’s getting better.
This is so much fun, I don’t know who came up with the prompt idea but it’s freaking awesome. =)
