The Truth

Naomi and Sean sit in silence for a very uncomfortable amount of time. Sean finally breaks the silence.

"What do you think you know about me?" coming off more like a challenge.

"I know there's more to this case than your telling me," she says in a "˜as a matter of fact' tone.

Sean nods and grins, still chewing his food.

"Come on, I made breakfast" he stands up and walks to the kitchen. Naomi is baffled, he's supposed to be arguing with her, not serving her breakfast. She follows and sits in the kitchen counter as Sean places a plate of food in front of her. He asks her if she wants coffee or orange juice with her food, she simply says coffee. After her food is served, he sits directly in front of her and sips on his own coffee. Naomi wastes no time and digs in her waffles, eggs, and bacon.

"This is good! Or maybe I'm just starving" she says with a mouth full. Sean watches her eat, wondering where to start. Naomi can tell he's having trouble bringing up the conversation.

"So tell me about your sister" after the words come out she realizes, it must not be that easy for him to talk about it, but it seems like the little push he needs.

"Sherice and I were separated when we were very young. Besides the pictures that dad had, I didn't really know what she looked like. The letter you just read was sent to me when I was about 16. I tried many times to get in touch with them but all the addresses she sent ended up being dead ends. Either she had just moved or hadn't lived there in months. My aunt was very upset when she found out she wrote to me, and she even tried to rip that letter. She told me my mom had become a junkie and that my sister was a whore. I never did like my aunt much." A smile is on his face but his eyes show his pain. Naomi can't stop looking at him. Her silence informs him she wants to hear more. "A few months later after my 17th birthday, my dad told me the bad news about my sister. My dad alone prepared and paid for the funeral and my mom never showed up for the wake or at the cemetery. Until this day I haven't heard from her, whether she's dead or alive, it's unknown to me" he stands up and places his cup in the sink, looking out his little kitchen window towards the beach.

"When did you find out Dante was involved?" Naomi asks also standing up.

"Too late" his answer is short but explains a lot. Naomi changes the conversation quickly trying to lighten the mood.

"I saw the pictures of your wife, she's beautiful" Naomi knows she was murdered but it has been a little over a year already and figures it's safe.

"Yeah, she's an angel. She made candles like those over there; she made those right here in this kitchen" he says pointing to some lovely colored candles on the island.

"Tell me about her Sean, I don't mean the bad part, just the good memories" Sean signals for her to follow him outside in the terrace. Outside they sit on the beach chairs. Naomi takes in the brisk salty air.

"It's beautiful here isn't it? Sean says.

"It sure is." she answers.

"Stacy loved the beach. It calmed her, sort of like therapy, you know. I wanted her to be happy. That's why I bought this house, so she'd always be care-free" he lights up a cigarette, something he hardly did, but talking about Stacey always puts his nerves on edge. " You ever been married?" he asks looking over to her.

"No, came close once, but no cigar" she grins shyly.

"What happened? You scare him away" he smiles teasingly. Naomi giggles thinking back.

"No, nothing like that. My dad was very strict when it came to whom I dated. He never approved of my boyfriend and when he found out that Jorge proposed to me..." Sean begins to laugh out loud.

"What? What's so funny?" Naomi asks.

"Jorge? That was his name? Sounds like a computer geek to me" he can hardly stop laughing. Naomi mockingly laughs.

"Yeah, well I'll inform you Mr. Vetter that he was no geek, all the opposite actually. He was a thug and sold drugs for a living, but that didn't matter to me. I knew he was a great person inside. I saw what a lot of people couldn't see "“ his soul." She stays quiet and so does Sean. He understand exactly what that was like "“ being misunderstood, the only one that saw passed his thugged exterior had been Stacey. Naomi looks back at Sean who is finishing his cigarette.

"So tell me Mr. Sean T. Vetter... What's the T for?" Naomi raises an eyebrow and grins.

"No way" he gets up and walks inside. Naomi follows.

"Aww, come on tell me, is it Thomas, Timothy, how about Tony?" Sean looks back at her and begins to laugh.
