Waiting in the shadows2

In the Shadows - Part 2

In the Shadows - Part 2

When Daniel opened the door, he only had a small view into the room, but that was enough for him. He could see what he wanted to see. He saw Darren on stage playing some role, which seemed to be Shakespeare's "Hamlet". He stood quietly and listened to Darren's voice, so soft, so full of passion. Before long, he closed the door as silently as he had opened it, and leaned back against the far wall, full of confusion.

Why are you doing this? Why are you stalking a guy you've never even noticed before?

Daniel didn't know. He was basketball player, a jock, he wasn't supposed to be affected by a guy. He shook his head, not stopping until the world around him began to spin. Dizzy now, Daniel made his way downstairs out of the building. He had to leave. He didn't like what this Darren guy did to him. He couldn't let it happen.

The next day's first lesson was Literature for Daniel. He had chosen that under the suspicious looks of his sport mates. But no matter how it looked, he really liked coping with literature, although he was more than bad in this subject. But people sometimes decide to try things, they actually can't handle.

Daniel was one of the first students coming to the room, he seated himself in the middle row of the window side, so when he didn't understand one thing, he at least had a good view of the nearby park. His actions the day before, spying on Darren, were nearly forgotten, although he hadn't slept the whole night because of it. Daniel didn't understand it. He had never looked at guys before. He was supposed to date girls, not guys! He kept repeating that like a mantra, over and over in his head, until a soft, shy voice brought him to reality again. It was then that Daniel realized that the room was crowded and full. He never thought so many people would choose literature.

Then he turned his gaze towards the person who mentally woke him up, and his heart began beating faster . It was Darren. He was dressed in black jeans, which lay loose on his hips. He wore a black shirt, unbuttoned at his neck, showing a small silver cross around it. Daniel was struck by the sight. Darren looked so delicate and innocent. When Daniel met his eyes, he saw them fill with sadness, and Darren was about to turn away, when Daniel panicked.

"Sorry, what was your question? I was daydreaming."

"I ...um...the room is crowded. I just wondered if I could sit here in this row, next to you..." he repeated so quietly, that Daniel had trouble understanding. He didn't answer fast enough.

"...only if it's no problem for you..."

Daniel just stared and nodded, unable to say a simple word. Darren didn't understand and settled down two seats next to Daniel. When Daniel could think clearly again, he was more than confused. Why did this guy affect him so much? He just asked a simple question....Daniel shook this thoughts away, he didn't like to think about this. Instead, he tried to concentrate on the lesson, which had already begun. Every now and then he risked a gaze towards his new neighbour. Darren's messy black hair covered most of his eyes, and his loose clothes seemed to cover his delicate body too much....

Get a grip Jones. Whatcha thinking? He's a guy, you are a guy, so no affection is possible!

Darren hid his head deep in the book they were supposed to read. Soon, he felt that gaze on him again. He didn't dare to look to see who gazed at him. He was sure he knew already.

It's just a mean game, or something like that. He thought. Why else should this guy Daniel have interest in me? Snap out of it Darren, that's illusion, not reality.

Darren couldn't ignore the silent call any longer though and soon found himself caught in that angelic green gaze once more. He was certain that he never stood a chance with the owner of those eyes, with Daniel. That realization saddened him and he went back to carefully read his book.

Class was over as soon as it began, it seemed. As always, Darren was the last to leave the room. Whilst packing his things together, he stole a glance towards Daniel, or where he assumed he would be. But when he looked to his left, he found Daniel already gone.

He didn't even dare to say 'bye' to you, Darren thought, disappointed, yet absolutely sure that the intense gaze of the green eyes meant nothing.

Lost in his thoughts, Darren made his way out of the room to the nearby park. He hadn't any lessons till 2 PM, when drama began, so he decided to practice his role. When he arrived at the park, he chose a place in the shadows of a tree. He settled himself down, leaning back against the trunk, letting his eyes wander around the yard, to the nearby athletic field. Through the fences he could see some students playing soccer, at least that's what it looked like. Darren finally broke free from his absent gazing and pulled out his drama book. He was only set for a small role, but he intended to play it well anyway. Time passed, and Darren was so deep into his play, that he didn't recognized the female who approached him.

"Hello," she said softly.

Darren looked up, shocked. No one ever talked to him, and for sure not in such a polite way.

"Hi," he replied.

That was enough for the girl, to settle herself next to him. Darren watched her closer. She was as small as he was, blonde hair curved soft around her shoulders, and her dress had flowers on it. It made her look kinda cute. Cute in the way you talk about puppies or babies. Darren smiled at that thought. When she spoke again, she was watching Darren with warm purple eyes.

"I'm Kat, we're stuck in Literature together."

Darren remembered then, seeing her before. And also it dawned on him now, that this was the ex-girlfriend of Robert. That's why she knew him, and why she seemed familiar. They'd had Literature together last semester, too.

"Yeah right, I remember you. I'm Darren, what can I do for you?" Darren sounded slightly annoyed, although he didn't meant it. He just didn't cope with women very well. He didn't know how to approach them in a good way.

When Kat didn't answer at first, he thought that she had recognized the annoyance in his tone. But he was proved wrong when she answered.

" Um...actually, I'm bad in literature, and I thought...yeah...I thought you have a better understanding of all this and maybe you could help me sometimes a bit with it?"

Darren just starred at her. Did she actually ask HIM for help? HIM, the queer? As he looked her in her eyes, he saw the seriousness of her question. She seemed to mean it, to want help from him. Darren smiled at this realization and nodded slowly.

"Yeah, why not, if I can."

Kat seemed glad now. She jumped to her feet, looking down at Darren. "Thanks, that's really nice of you. Let's say I'll catch you at lunch, if I've got questions. Is that ok with you?"

"Sounds fine," Darren answered softly. He watched the blonde when she made her way back to the school building. He felt kind of happy that some people didn't avoid him, even if it was only to ask for help. Someone simply looking to get an advantage through him. He cooled his enthusiasm and went back to his book, not realizing that on the other side of the fences of the sports yard, someone was really pissed, at what he saw....
